253 MPH and Still a Little Late
Los Angeles Times ^

A superlative on four wheels, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is not only the world's fastest production car but also the most expensive: $1.25 million before taxes and richly deserved gas-guzzler penalties. Also, the most powerful: Its 8.0-liter 16-cylinder quad-turbo engine produces about 1,000 horsepower and churns it through a high-tech all-wheel-drive system and gob-smacking foot-wide tires. Also, the quickest: The Veyron accelerates to 60 mph in 2.1 seconds, faster than a Formula 1 car, but then it's just getting started. In 20 seconds — about the time it takes a fast reader to get through this paragraph — it reaches 200 mph. In 53 mind-blowing seconds, the Veyron reaches its marquee speed: 253 mph.

Here it Lubbock, it would soon be attacked, beaten, and robbed by a pack of rogue SUVs.

Speaking of Lubbock, I wonder what kind of dent an orange traffic cone would make at 200 MPH? I wouldn't worry about the local bomb craters potholes, this thing would just fly right over them.

Which just goes to show that many, many things rise above politics.

I read about this. I think it's beautiful. I'm glad they made it. But if I had a million and a quarter, I wouldn't buy it.

I'm just glad someone will, because it's really fun to look at and prolly even more fun to drive. And, if I may say so, a very interesting glimpse into the male psyche.

A mother's worst nightmare: loosing the kids to stupid car behavior.

A father's worst nightmare: loosing the kids AND the car to stupid car behavior.

(yes, I know a stereotype, but it did come from somewhere.)

Exactly what I think.

I think it highly possible that the big EB could beat an F1 car to 60 (although lose eventually at higher speeds esp. if the F1 wings were made somewhat less agressive), given the fact that the Bug is AWD.

The F1 car is very traction-limited at slower speeds. The wings provide enough downforce at higher speeds to allow 1.5g+ accel.

Does Julia Ormond come with the car? If so, I'll buy my way to the top of the waiting list.

Anyway... Trajan88 is quite happy with a True Blue '01 Bullitt Mustang GT (she loves Texas Tea... black gold).

Actually, the Car Show guys are probably the ONLY sane hosts on KPFK, home of communist radio in L.A..

It is a real car show for enthusiasts, not 2 brothers shouting "and don't drive like my brother!"

I miss Len Frank.

"About $1,200,000 (plus tax).'

Whoa!....forgot about the tax...mmmm in my state it would be about $60,000...well if I can afford $1,200,000 then I guess $60,000 is fair. I don't know...leave this to those that have the money to blow...I'm going outside to put the newspapers on my windshield...supposed to get a frost tonight.

Not too long ago, I'd have been completely blown away by any automobile with the capabilities this car has. But now at 48, I can't seem to muster much want( or desire) for anything like this.

It is far too costly to own, and entirely too impractical to be driven.

Even if I had the money to afford it, I couldn't possibly see myself wanting it.

Funny, but I'm suddenly thinking of an old "Janis Joplin" song; about a Mercedes Benz.

Now that, I can relate to!

Give yourself another 20 years and you'll share my opinion - a chauffer-driven limosine is the best of all worlds.

I guess the show is "fancy cars for liberals" while the liberal hypocrites tell "the rest of us" to get on the bus or train and not criticize environmental nutburgers.

Scratch a socialist and they will bleed blue-blood just like an aristocrat. Which is who the Left really are. Nothing but broke aristocrats.
