Someone opened my gate and I didn't know it.

I did my usual routine. Let Solitare out. Brush teeth, comb hair make coffee..Trade dogs.

No dog to trade. She had been outside at least 10 minutes.

She could have been miles away by then or worse, gone toward the main road and been splattered.

I went out in my jammies and called her.

Went back in the house for shoes and a coat and her leash to go looking for her.

Her bright little face was at the back door.

She didn't go farther than she could hear and came back when I called.

Whew!
A couple times Ive let Pooks out and immediatly thought "did you check the gate"

I always keep it closed but you never know. Kids or meter readers could leave the dang thig hanging open
