The sad thing is, the SFPD still has a lot of old-school no-nonsense white male (many of them Irish) police officers - the ones who dealt with the anti-war lunatics so effectively. The diversity hires seem to be doing everything they can to reduce the power and influence of this group within the department, while still keeping them around to rely on in the event of a real emergency. They like having the white males as as rank-and-file shock troops, just not as captains.
