Ouch!
The projectile will tend to align itself with its direction of flight due to aerodynamics. Since it is spinning, the gyroscopic effect will cause the nose to turn to one side during flight, which will cause the projectile to divert from a simple arc. The mechanics have been worked out, but considerable training is necessary for the crew to attain accuracy.
Yeah!
The M119 isn't air droppable if memory serves.
At least we weren't told we could do that.
Considering how often we broke stuff on it, I'd say the M119 isn't air droppable.
Helo portable, yes.
Air droppable, no.
So the M777 has that on my old unit.
*chuckle*
Has to be pretty tough to be air droppable.
"--this will seem like a dumb question, but I'm not at all familiar with heavy artillery"
No questions are dumb. Questions are inanimate and therefore be neither smart nor dumb. There can only be dumb question askers. Anyway, it is a good question. So now I will give you a stupid answer. I am not familiar with heavy artillery either.
"--the projectile, spun by the rifling, starts out at the angle of the barrel of the artillery piece. At what angle does it contact the target at say 30 km-?"
I would say that it will hit at the same angle that it was fired at. If the barrell elevation is 45 degrees, then it will hit the target at 45 degrees. The shell should arc in a very nice parabola shape.
Yeah I'd say....
Pantel mount on the M119 is notoriously touchy about what you do to it.
It'll survive jarring jolts, like running over rocks potholes and foxholes.
But it won't survive being leaned on by the Corporal, and it won't survive an air drop and stay accurate.
LOL....
the M-16 is tougher than that :)
Of course, our Corporal was a huge guy with a near two and a half foot wide shoulder width...
LOL!
Given that we have 24/7 air support with pinpoint bombing, why do we need arty?
Artillery is the same as calvary against tanks - outmoded and dead.
How do you suppose the "drop" this? Slide out the back of a C-130 on a skid, or by chute?
the-they
Thanks for the post.
Less pilots get killed with this system. Sometimes an old concept is better. This is a standoff system. Less men are put at risk. Every hour a plane flies there are 48 hours of maintenance done on the plane, etc. A very cost effective system.
Yeah, baby.
Its not dumb. The range depends on both the angle and explosive force propelling the round. You will typically get the best range from a 45 degree angle. Darksheare worked with artillery so he will know more than I.
I would guess chute, but let's ask an expert!
Hey Darks, come here a minute!
They're claiming it light, but the look of the barrel alone, I'd guesstimate from the picture to weigh in at least four tons...
