"It was the second time the Conservatives had attempted to change the law in the victims' favour."The purpose shouldn't be to favor the victim. It should be to allow the homeowner to re-classify the perp as the victim.

There is something fundamentally preverted in a species of law enforcement and legislation, which seeks to protect burglars from property owners. There is a net social benefit if burglars can expect instant death, rather than protection. There is no social benefit, whatsoever, in prosecuting a homeowner for injuring or killing a burglar. IMHO, any juror should ask himself (among other things) whether the world would be a better or worse place if a lot more people behaved like the accused. Note that this is a different question from whether the accused's behavior as an individual was helpful or harmful to society.

Are there any radio or TV facilities open to real debate on the social and economic issues in contemporary Britain? I cannot believe that in a country with a large educated class, such as England, there are not scores of articulate Conservatives, who could absolutely humiliate the spokesmen for the Government on such issues as this. All of modern "Liberalism"--that is the variety of Fabian Socialism that pretends to be compassionately seeking the public weal, while promoting the growth of Centralized tyranny in pursuit of fantasy goals--is "cloudborne and airborne," as Kipling put it, in 1919.
It is premised on a wish list, not human experience and certainly not anything resembling common sense. Any articulate Conservative, who has a consistent, coherent and cohesive grasp of the dynamics of human interaction, can make a total fool out of any such "Liberal." Yet they keep getting elected--often because the political spokesmen on the Right do not have the self-confidence in being able to counter the fantastic rhetoric of delusion, to challenge the underlying implications, head on.
