Trees May Be Bad for You

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 7 - In the effort to slow earth's rising temperatures, even a well-intentioned proposal could backfire, scientists said Wednesday.

One suggestion has been to grow more trees, which absorb carbon dioxide, the gas blamed for trapping heat. More trees mean more carbon dioxide removed from the air.

New computer simulations, however, indicate that establishing new forests across North America could provide a cooling effect for a few decades to a century, but that after that, they would lead to more warming.

"There's really no simple answer," said Ken Caldeira, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, Calif., who presented the research at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union here. "At least in this calculation, there is predicted to be a net warming effect."

I'm doing my part.

I have a few 22-inch sections in the stove right now...

Carnegie Institution Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, Calif.

Enough said.

We're all doomed, and people who hail from "Institution Departments of Global Ecology" won't be satisfied until the real villain -- man -- vacates the earth, leaving it to revert to its pristine beauty, which no one will see, of course, except the animals.

I know, let's fund a study to determine the exact number of trees in the world needed to strike a balance between global warming and a mini ice age. I will, of course, handle the study and all funds should be directed through me, plus I will need a salary of 300 grand a year(just for the first year and after that I will need raises of 25,000 per year). This study should take a life time because we will continually need to adjust the growth of trees to keep the balance just right! /sar

We're doomed no matter what we do.

If we pollute, we all die from global warming.

If we stop polluting, we plunge headlong into another ice age.

We should just kill ourselves and get it over with, as long as all the dead corpses would not upset the earth's eco-balance.

When I'm elected president, I'll appoint you Secretary of Cutting Down and/or Growing Trees. How much graft can you do daily?

I can handle all the graft you can send me, I am taking lessons from the Clintons. They have set up a school on how to rip off the taxpayers and the study scam is the first thing you learn, but I am willing to branch out!

What!? How dare you bring common sense to the global warming debate? ;-)

So who do we blame when the sun burns out? =)

Guess we could time a jump to Venus, then Mercury, etc.

These Godless atheists don't have a plan. It's a quagmire.

Actually, that would be going in the wrong direction. The sun will first expand into a red giant before it burns out, consuming the inner planets first. We would have to run away from it.
