Illegal Immigration: When a one-issue activist from a fringe party holds the Republican candidate to under 45% in GOP territory, it's time to take notice.

If you're looking for the Orange County of pop culture and political lore, you'll find it in California's 48th Congressional District. This is the quintessential O.C., from storied beaches to rock-ribbed Republicanism. Outside the college enclave of U.C. Irvine, this is turf where the GOP reigns and its candidates usually win in a walk.

Well Said!

Good article with the exception of repeated reference of "one-issue candidate."

You are right about Perot, so why are you afraid of Tancredo? If it takes another Dem president to pave the way for BOTH parties to get serious about border security and the illegal immigration problem. Then let's get on with it.

Nice article. Thanks for posting it. :)

I'm not sure how many folks realize that the American Independent Party is actually the California branch of the Constimatooshin Party. The Constimatooshin Party is pretty much kook central.

Running under the banner of the American Independent Party, Gilchrist ended up with 25%. That had nothing to do with the AIP, a minor party that polls 1% on its good days. It had everything to do with Gilchrist's fame as co-founder of the border-watching Minuteman Project.

25%. Take notice, indeed.

I agree. If that's what it takes to either 1) make the Republican politicians get back to what their base wants or 2) create a strong truly conservative 3rd party out of the ashes of the Republican party, then it would be worth it.

This invasion has been going on for decades and has already severely impacted our schools, our culture, our language, and our health care. I don't know if it's beyond repair now, but we better try or start learning Spanish and start getting used to a 3rd world standard of living.

We have an increasing number of Che wannabes in my area. One of them got up at the city council meeting the other evening and proceeded to call the mayor a racist pig.

Think I'll ask Santa for one of these:
