Former U.S. Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton announced Wednesday the recipients of $90 million of Hurricane Katrina relief money, unveiling the grants at the University of New Orleans.

The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, a tax-exempt charity established to assist the recovery that has raised $110 million from individual and corporate donors, will distribute the first amounts in three grants.

They include:

$40 million to funds established by the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama for non-governmental needs.

$30 million to more than 30 colleges and secondary schools in the three states.

$20 million to a ministers fund, administered by an executive committee of clergy, to address the needs of their communities and congregations. The school money will be earmarked to repair campus buildings, pay teachers whose schools are closed and assist displaced students, according to a news release on the fund's Web site.

"Universities and colleges are the cornerstones of communities across the region. Helping them get back on their feet is a key to the long-term recovery of the Gulf," Bush said.

"These institutions need to re-establish themselves to give people hope that the foundations of their communities will be there now and in the future," Clinton said. "Colleges and universities not only train new workers but they are often the largest employers in their communities."

Bush and Clinton also planned to tout the importance of faith-based organizations.

"In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, local and national churches and religious organizations were tremendously helpful in providing for the needs of the people of the Gulf Coast, but at extreme financial strain," Clinton said....

I'm sick of this "X money" is "support" crap.

Most of the people around me make a LOT more than I do, partly cuz some of them are in better jobs and largely cuz they work extra hours.

When it comes time to delivering on the benefits of monetary expenditure, I'm the only one who can cough up the cash when everyone else is interested. Last Christmas, I had to by 4 tickets to Blue Man, because 2 of my buddies could only afford ONE ticket, and I ain't going to an art expo with my chick, and 2 more men, so I tossed up the bank for their wives.

That anectdote included, spending money doesn't mean you are nice! spending money on the RIGHT THINGS shows that you are nice. Taking the time to buy the things that are needed, buy thing things that are appreciated, buying things that serve a purpose, is a measure of aid, not the amount of money you throw at a thing and then forget about.

I HATE the idea that money = nice. Ask a whore about how nice their johns are. The Leftist idea that money is kindness only shows that they are nothing more than political "Johns"

$40 million for non governmental needs. What the hell is that?

$50 million for colleges and ministers. We don't need schools and churches. We need roads, homes rebuilt, debris removed. This money would have been better spent being flushed down the toilet.

Wouldn't the money be used for things like housing, transportation needs, etc that is not covered by insurance? Hell at least y'alls hurricane is getting some help ;). I'm a Rita victim and we barely get mentioned much less assistance ie you and me.

Yes we do need schools. It is a vital part of the infrastructure. Workers and businesses will not relocate there if they don't have safe schools. I know that McNeese got about 10,000,000 in damages alone that will need to be repaired. Every school in Calcasieu and Cameron Parish were seriously damaged if not out and out destroyed. I don't even know if Rita or Wilma victims are part of this benevolence.

How many textbooks, libraries, science equipment, computers, athletic equipment, musical instruments, etc needs to be replaced? If the schools can get help from the private sector then it's less money from the state, fed and local governments.

For example one of the LNG plants that is under construction in Cameron Parish donated $500,000 to Johnson Bayou High School so that the school could purchase some temporary buildings with all the necessary school paraphenalia including desks, text books, computer lab, etc. This is a small school probably less than 500 students total because they want the best workers they can hire and good schools are a necessity.

As far as churches, I know that my denomination won't take any funds but others have put out a ton of money housing and feeding these folks. These are private donations like the tsunami thing they did.

After listening to the committee hearings yesterday on Katrina, I resent every red dime that is being spent on those ingrates.

Unfortunately it costs money to replace everything and most contractors refuse to work for free.

The sad thing is not everyone is ungrateful. They are only showing those for political reasons. NOLA wasn't the only area devastated by hurricanes this year.

You are right, and being very kind in regards to my remark

It just infuriates me that the black activist are painting a picture of horrible abuse, when the people of Mississippi and Alabama are going through the very same problems. The CEO of the Black Chamber of Commerce is convinced that the levee's were breached by a bomb, because a black civil engineer says it is so, and that there could be no other explanation for a lowd sound that was heard that morning. Chris Shays went right along with them as well as, Tom Davis from Virginia.

Money is necessary, but supervision, and disciplined application is the TRUE measure of accomplishment.

Ever run into a "bum" on the street who says "got some change for some soup?"

Well, when I worked in the city, I used to say "yeah, come on, lets get some soup." none of the bums accepted a gift of soup, they wanted money.

That is my problem with the "money = kindness" I tend to think that "money as kindness = the propagation of bums"

99% of the people affected aren't bums though. These are your regular joe blow citizens who were dealt a bad hand. Don't think you will be immune to needing help one day. Mother Nature's a bitch sometimes. She doesn't care who you are are.

My house was spared from being destroyed simply because the tornado jumped my street, it hit both streets on either side of me.

Just keep in mind that the dems have no other chance at regaining power. That is why they are milking this as much as they can.

The people getting the money aren't "the people" they are the bums used to getting handouts from the government so that they can HELP the needy.

One question, if the folks needing help were white would you be so against helping out? Honest question here.

My Brother lived in Florida for 5 years, he lived through many hurricanes, I was in Okinawa for a year, and rode out 5 Typhoons, my brother after he left Florida went to Seattle, and was present for the 6 odd earthquake that occurred somewhere between 2000 and 2003 I think, I lived in California until 2000 and saw the 6 odd earthquake that lurched the desert.

I understand that people sometimes need help, but the GAME being played with Katrina isn't about YOU who might have suffered, or the PEOPLE who lost their houses, or family members, it is about subsidizing state ran incompetence which is part of why NO and Louisiana in general is suffering. to just throw out a number and GIVE it to the state, is like giving a bum saying "i need soup" money, instead of walking him to a restaurant and being willing to BUY him soup.

If you measure it up? A Bum buying soup with the money you give him without concern costs a few thousand more percent than just taking him to a restaurant and paying for the soup right then and there.

This was money donated by willing individuals. If you don't want to give then fine, however those who donated did so because they wanted to. So do you want to let Bill Clinton keep all that dough that was donated? He probably already is taking a large cut as it is.
