LINCOLN, Neb. -- Two Lincoln teenagers have been ticketed for having sex in a high school hallway during the lunch hour while at least a dozen students watched, according to Lincoln police.
School officials said the incident happened over the lunch hour Wednesday at Lincoln Southeast. A female 17-year-old and a male 19-year-old apparently snuck past a gate to get into a restricted hallway near the Prasch Activity Center. Lincoln police said at least a dozen students watched through the gate.
A school administrator found the couple and called a school resource officer.
"I don't want the message to families (to be that) this is happening indiscriminately all over the halls," said Becky Wild, with Lincoln Public Schools.
Wild said she remembers only one other incident like this in the last 10 years. She said LPS takes it very seriously, and administrators are asking themselves some tough questions.
"Are there some areas in our schools that are not as visible to the adults that supervise? We need to figure out how we cover those. Do we need to be talking with students about appropriate behavior?" Wild said.
Word of the incident doesn't sit well with some students.
"It's inappropriate," said one student. "It is. First of all, they don't need to be doing that in front of other people."
Students told KETV NewsWatch 7 that they believe sex in the hallways is rare, but sexual activity in schools happens more than adults think.
"If a kid thinks they can do that and it's going to make them popular, that's the level people go to nowadays," said student Danielle Thompson.
"I honestly think it could happen, and it probably does happen at their schools. People just don't know about it," said student Tomika Hopkins-Sanders.
LPS said students involved in sexual activity at school could face disciplinary action, counseling, suspension or even expulsion.
School officials will look at changes that can be made to prevent this kind of incident, but admitted that it's tough to keep an eye on every student at every moment of the day.

When I was a teen, there was still some modicum of modesty and discretion.
This was when the pill for unmarrieds was uncommon, and abortion was illegal.
The wimmen's movement was still in it's infancy.
There were some things that a girl couldn't hide, should she be caught.
That contributed a lot to morality back then.
"some folks don't grasp the dignity thingie"
Dignity and self-respect were part of it, too. ;o)
"you should hear about my cousin's daughter who is a nurse at a public hospital in Jackson Miss and caught a 14 year old girl 3 hours after having vaginally delivered her third child having intercourse with some 25 year old squire"
Good grief!

Those might help a bit, and for a while.
But, don't you know they would find
a way around those obstacles. ;o)

That was creepy.

"Counseling for whom?"
IIRC, the daughter.
IMHO, it was the father in need of counseling.

Well, under similar circumstances, I would offer the boy counseling as well.
He can see Dr. Winchester, or Dr. Remington, or Dr. Ruger, or Drs. Smith and Wesson, or ...

Officer Katherine Finnell said a 17-year-old girl and 19-year-old boy were cited Wednesday after a school staff member contacted police about the incident Tuesday around 12:30 p.m.
In an e-mail to parents Friday, Principal Pat Hunter-Pirtle said the two were caught in a hallway where card tables and folding chairs are stored.
The lights were off, he said, and an administrator checking gates and doors almost tripped over the students because it was so dark.
He disputed the police report that a crowd of students had gathered to watch the two.
Once the administrator started talking to the two students, about 12 students who were behind the gate that is locked near the swimming pool, came to the gate to see what what was going on, Hunter-Pirtle wrote.

Moral absolutes ping.
I'm just helping Little Jeremiah out with this ping list for a few days.

Their parents must be soooo disappointed in them. When are they going to learn to charge admission for these sort of things? And have a video crew handy? A perfectly good opportunity to pay their way through college squandered.

Thanks wagglebee,
Well I wont lay any moral judgment on the kids. That does not mean I condone what went down either.
It seems in this article is more about that it was in the school and seen more than anything else.
Sex has consequence, and those are not innocent. But most at that age don't or won't see the consequence's prior, and therein lies the illusion of innocence.

A lot of us, myself included, did things in our youth that we later wished we could go back and undo. Teenagers have a feeling of invincibility and think that they are owed something, most grow out of this and turn out okay, but some have their lives destroyed.
I see the way kids act these days and the things that they are doing go way beyond what was once considered "rebellion". Too many children are engaging in behaviors that will leave long lasting emotional scars, and potentially deadly health consequences.

I don't recall this kind of stuff when I was in school. And what's the deal with the 19yo high school student?
Here, perhaps, is a better question: What's the deal with 22 year old males still in high school? And 20 and 21 year old males in high school classes with 16 year old girls?
Here's the answer: It happens when public elementary schools illegally and deliberately ignore district policy and state law, and refuse to provide required extra help and altrerantive placement classes to grade school students who've already been left back 2 or 3 or 4 years.
When this happens -- and, I can tell you firsthand it's happening right now in at least one public K-8 school -- - then, the inevitable result is that someday you'll be seeing more of these incidents, known as statutory rape, in high school hallways.
Now, whose fault is this? Well, it's not the fault of yours truly, as this teacher knows how to get online and find out the laws pertaining to pupil progression when she sees middle school aged students in a regular elementary school grade class.
And, in my opinion: it's not the governor's fault, since the state law here in Florida requires public schools to "CONSIDER" alterantive placement.
And, it's not the school district's fault, since some school districts are right on the same page as the state -- and take it a step further, REQUIRING alternative placement for any student already retained two or more years.
In short, IMO: It's the principal's fault, for willfully ignoring a teacher who notified her that she is not in compliance with district polict and state law.
But, c'est la vie. Teachers have no power. That's why they make no money and get no respect from the outside world. They can see, they can learn, they can think, but the disasters in the world of public education go on and on with no point or purpose.
Final question: What's always more important to some school administrators than students and teachers?
Answer: A professional title -- the principal who needs to get her pension and keep her position of power above ALL ELSE. So, the hell with kids, laws, teachers and any future consequences.
OK, that's my rant for today -- hope you've enjoyed this real life mini-lesson about public education!

alterantive placement = alternaticve placement

Sorry about the typos. And, I don't really know for sure what the reason is for what I believe is a principal's willfull violation of state law and district policy. Maybe it's just one of the Mysteries of Life. Who knows...
