SARASOTA, Fla. Bud Carson, who developed Pittsburgh's "Steel Curtain" defense, has died of emphysema at age 75.
Carson, a defensive back at North Carolina from 1949 through 1951, was the Steelers' defensive coordinator from 1972 through 1977, and shaped a defense led by Joe Greene, Jack Ham and Jack Lambert into one of the best in N-F-L history. In that span, the Steelers won three Super Bowl titles under coach Chuck Noll.
Carson then became defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams, who lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl after the 1979 season. He coached the Cleveland Browns in 1989 and 1990, posting an 11-13-1 record.
Cleveland won the A-F-C Central in his first season, beating Buffalo 34-30 in the playoffs before losing to Denver 37-31 in the A-F-C championship game. He was fired the next year when the team got off to a 2-7 start.
Carson also coached Georgia Tech from 1967 through 1971, posting a 27-27 record and a win in the 1970 Sun Bowl.
70s Steelers' D-line bump: "Mean Joe" Greene, L.C. Greenwood, Ernie Holmes, and Dwight White.
(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
Yoi and double yoi!
Still remember Bud's first game as coach of the Browns in 1989. Beat the Steelers 51-0 in Pittsburgh. Most lopsided loss ever for the Steelers. Loved that game!
Farewell Bud.
Proof that any thread can be turned into one about illegal immigration.
Glory days.
R.I.P., Bud Carson. A man who knew football inside and out.
I played football once!
Hey, dfu, what your demands for this hijacking?
According to evrything I ever read a classy guy. Thoughts and prayers for his family.
I'll have my comment removed. It's the first time I've commented about illegal immigration on a thread that didn't pertain. Sorry, Steeler fans.
One of the great ones....he did a great job with the Rams defense too. RIP
