Layton promises one-quarter cut in greenhouse gas emissions

NDP Leader Jack Layton is promising to cut greenhouse gas emissions by one-quarter over the next 15 years as part of his plan for the environment introduced Tuesday.

Layton slammed the Liberals' environmental record while speaking to reporters outside an international climate change conference in Montreal.

"It is a disgrace that our emissions, after we have been promised by Mr. Martin that they would be reduced by 20 per cent, are up by 24 per cent – worst in the developed world," Layton said while campaigning for the Jan. 23 election.

Layton's plan includes the creation of a new clean water act that would set national standards for drinking water; an act to force polluters to clean up, and a new clean air act.

He also proposed a $10-billion plan to retro-fit hundreds of thousands of homes with more energy-efficient technology.

But the leader refused to put a price on his plan to address greenhouse gas emissions.

"We can't be precise about the cost for the next 20 or 15 years. That's a bit too long a time frame."

Funny wording there to say the least! Would he 'refuse' to put a price on his plan because it would throw the entire Canadian economy into the trash???

Also, I thought that Stefane Dion vowed a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions?

Liberals do better in promising sweeping reforms than in worrying about the costs or side affects if those reforms are implemented. It's all about the lofty goal, and not whether it's practical or even detrimental.

Well good luck at all that, your economy would have to be driven to 3rd world levels to get a reduction by that much. Glad this bozo isn't an American politician, though some of ours are just as bad.

I had to post this one, This guy is an absolute nut. He reminds me of Homer Simpson when he ran and was elected for city sanitation commissioner of Springfield. His entire campaign was titled: "Can't someone else do it?!" (i.e. the govt should clean out your trash can, scoop kitty litter, blow your nose, etc)

He was elected, and blew an entire year's budget in a month ordering 'Amphibious garbage trucks'. So many parallels! The Simpsons is a pretty good parody on liberalism.

"...over the next 15 years..."

Fifteen years from now Layton won't even remember ever promising this crap. Politicians are full of it.

If they institutionalize homosexuality, outlaw heterosexuality, kick out the Christians, they might be able to reduce their emissions by about 75%.

Of course their population would be reduced to a fraction of what it is now, but Canada would be one of the cleanest, emptiest countries in the world.

If he just limited his speaking engagements some, Canada's greenhouse emissions could easily be reduced by 25%.
