Former Tampa philanthropist Jimmy Walter is leading a group of conspiracy theorists calling for an independent investigation into the U.S. government's role in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The group, which also includes a computer programmer, a former government economist, a World Trade Center survivor and a talk radio host, is kicking off three Tampa public meetings this week. They will discuss their belief that high-level government operatives staged the terrorist attacks to push the country into war with Iraq and funnel money to well-connected defense contractors. Panelists produced several books and DVDs that claim to show, in part, that the Trade Center towers were rigged with explosives before the attacks.
``They call us conspiracy nuts, but I call them coincidence nuts,'' Walter said a news conference today at the Don Vincente De Ybor Hotel.
Walter conducted polling in New York City in which 64 percent of respondents said they thought local officials should open a new investigation into unanswered questions in the official Sept. 11 report.
`This is not a fringe theory,'' said Walter, who wore a button that said: ``The official 911 story is a big lie.''

I have an aquaintence who truely believes this theory. I shake my head every time he comes up with a new snipit to "prove" this theory. These people are scary.

Exactly true. It even happens here. We have many people on FR who believe that Oswald didn't act alone, that it must have been some sort of CIA/Castro/Mafia/LBJ/Martian conspiracy, yet they're not actually certain why they believe what they do. One of my current standards of measuring the sanity of a person who is a political enthusiast is by what they believe about the JFK assassination.
In the years to come, I expect with great disappointment that I'll be using the yardstick of what people believe about the 9-11 attack to determine their sanity. I just hope it's not used against some teenage boy with green lipstick and black fingernails coming to pick up my daughter, because I don't need to sit in jail for 20+ years.
A lefty fellow of mine who has been decent to me for several years in political debates just recently flew into a frothing conniption fit in insisting that a relative of George Bush's was responsible for rigging the entire WTC complex with industrial explosives to be demolished on cue. His 'proof' amounted to a postage-stamp sized .GIF file that allegedly shows exploding demolitions in WTC11 that he linked to from a moonbat conspiracy site that also sells 'space aliens are real' DVDs.
None so blind as those that will not see.
I'm certain Osama lied on that tape we all saw. Oh wait! The DUmmies claim Osama is a CIA operative. He must work with Valerie.
