Christian group pulls Wells Fargo accounts
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/6/5 | Wyatt Buchanan

Focus on the Family objects to donation to gay rights group.

The conservative Christian group Focus on the Family has closed all its Wells Fargo accounts because the San Francisco bank contributed to a gay rights group that promised to use the funds to "fight ... the anti-gay industry."

A Focus on the Family official would not disclose how much money the organization kept with Wells Fargo, its primary bank, but said the nonprofit group's income was $146 million last year.

"We don't expect corporate America to do our bidding on the issues, but when they use the proceeds from our business and give them to others who clobber us over the head, we say enough is enough," said Tom Minnery, who oversees public policy for the organization.

Focus on the Family's move follows a recent spate of conservative boycotts and other actions against large companies that support gay and lesbian causes, including Walgreens drugstores and Kraft Foods Inc., both of which contributed to the Gay Games.

Conservative groups also have targeted Ford Motor Co. for advertising in gay media and Procter & Gamble for advertising during the television shows "Will & Grace" and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." The best-known protest may have been the nine-year boycott led by the Southern Baptist Convention against Walt Disney Co. for hosting Gay Days, a week of gay-themed activities at Walt Disney World in Orlando. That boycott ended in June.

A Wells Fargo spokesman said the $50,000 donation to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation came from profits on accounts in the San Francisco area, not Colorado, where Focus on the Family has its headquarters.

"We absolutely made a $50,000 grant to GLAAD, and we're absolutely proud . . .

Follow-up to last week's story.

I pulled all of my funds from Wells Fargo years ago, once they announced that they would no longer support the Scouts. And, when I closed my account, I told them why I was doing it.

Money talks and speaks volumns. Would that we all examine our values and the companies/people that we do business with and perhaps rethink an alternative.

That is what spurred many home school families to no longer send their children to schools that trashed their values. Unfortunately, without a change in our laws, these same families must continue to send their $$$ to the schools that have become so morally corrupt as to tenure sexual predators, hate Christ, and deny parents the right to monitor the classrooms their children spend 6-7 hours a day in.

It's very instructive to visit the Wells Fargo branch in your community, If Wells Fargo is in your area. Go to the front desk and ask for their brochure on Wells Fargo Charitable Donations. They have one for each state. In it is a list of non-profit organizations which have received grants from Wells Fargo Bank.

It's interesting to see, at least in the Minnesota brochure, how many church-operated private schools are on the list. I also found the Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, various Churches, and other organizations on the list.

The corporation appears to have a policy of donating to all comers, with United Way in the lead.

If you have a Wells Fargo branch in your community, go in and ask for the brochure and see what you think. It might just surprise you.

Wells Fargo is based in San Francisco. I used to work for First Interstate Bank which was taken over by Wells Fargo in 1996. We found out very quickly how deeply ingrained the gay lifestyle was in their upper management. Many of the First Interstate management people in California and other states chose to quit rather than work in an atmosphere of that type of mindset. They'd probably go under before they'll change their perverted ways.

Yes, some companies so strongly believe in the Corporate Keyword of "Diversity" that they will give everywhere they can.

Reminds me of the wishy-washy moderates who can't seem to make a decision every election.

I do business with a lot of companies that don't contribute to Scouting. However, the way that Wells Fargo publicly made such a fuss about withdrawing their support for Scouting ensured that I would never again do business with them.

I live in a very small town in Liberal Oregon, right at 4,000 people here which is up from 1,200 in the early 90's.
My kids are allowed to wear shirts proclaiming Christ, quite a few of thier teachers are christians and members of the various churches here.
the school has christmas vacation and my kids are singing christmas carols in the christmas program this month. at parent conferences the teachers and I discuss church activites without fear.
And this is a public school!! I just wanted all of you to know that there are some good things out there:)
As far as Wells Fargo I pulled my accounts with them a long time ago after they decided the Boy Scouts wernt worth supporting,my son was a scout at the time. Im glad I made that descion.

Good for Focus on the Family. However, because they had such a large amount of money that they had in the accounts and Wells Fargo promised that the money did not come from any of the Focus on the Family accounts. I wonder who is not going to get donations from Wells Fargo this year that would have otherwise. If they are giving to the Catholic Churches and other religious institutions, I am afraid that they won't be now. Just a thought...

I have, in the past five years, convinced three CFO's of large corporations to cease doing business through Wells Fargo. Two of them, I discussed the lack of support for the Scouts and one was a discussion about support for queers and the medical issues which result from being queer. I am working on two more CFO's about the banks acceptance of TIN's with illegal aliens. I think I'll have a Merry Christmas if I succeed with them.

I terminated my business with Wells Fargo in 2002 when they repeated dropped the ball on transferring my account from New Mexico (where I first opened the account) to Minnesota. My own anecdotal experience is that there is a direct correlation between misplaced priorities for petty "diverthity" games and decline in quality of product/services.

When conservatives learn how to use our $'s as neutralizers of the dark side, we will see the pendulum swinging back from the perversities of the dark side.
