BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two women strapped with explosives blew themselves up at Baghdad's police academy on Tuesday, killing 27 people and wounding 32, the U.S. military said.

The women blew themselves up in a classroom filled with students, the statement from Task Force Baghdad said. No U.S. forces were killed or wounded in the attack, it said.

U.S. forces rushed to the scene to provide assistant, the statement said.

Female Suicide Bombers Kill 27 in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two women strapped with explosives blew themselves up at Baghdad's police academy on Tuesday, killing 27 people and wounding 32, the U.S. military said.

The women blew themselves up in a classroom filled with students, the statement from Task Force Baghdad said. No U.S. forces were killed or wounded in the attack, it said.

U.S. forces rushed to the scene to provide assistant, the statement said.

Iraqi police said one bomb exploded in a cafeteria, while the other detonated during roll call. Police Lt. Ali Mi'tab said the women were probably students at the academy, which is why they were not searched.

Five other female police officers were among the dead, he added.

The roadside bombs are now camoflaged to look like concrete. The terrorists know where they are located because they also have infrared properties. They are combining low tech kamikazi warfare with hi-tech warfare re: roadside bombs.

I saw the report where someone had simply put a fence next to a road, put a concrete foundation below the fence like a low retaining wall, and put the IED in that. The sensor was in a styrofoam block to hide the IR signature, and there were two explosive devices timed a few seconds apart.

The most fascinating aspect is the concave copper disk that turns into an explosively-formed-projectile, a dart, that can penetrate light armor. Did you catch that power point DOD briefing on IEDs that was posted here a week or so back? A short length of 12" pipe gets loaded with explosive and topped with the disk, and the dart that forms with the explosion is phenomenal.
