DENVER -- Deborah Davis' refusal to show her identification to federal police at a bus stop has turned her into a cause celebre among privacy-rights advocates.
Mrs. Davis, a 50-year-old Arvada, Colo., grandmother of five, was handcuffed, placed in a police car and ticketed for two petty offenses by Federal Protective Services officers who were checking passengers' identification Sept. 26 aboard a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus at the Federal Center stop.
..< SNIP >..Several things bothered her about the ID checks. She wasn't entering a federal building or even leaving the bus. The officers barely glanced at the passengers' ID cards and didn't check them against a master list. The whole exercise struck her as "just Big Brother watching you," she said.

Has it occured to you that killing the patient to cure the disease doesn't work?
Has it occured to you that a very small number of maniacs have completely terrorized people like you? The Constitution is much more robust than you give it credit; tossing the 4th Amendment in favor of a panic-stricken "they're after us" will do far more harm than good in the long run.
The first step to really winning this war is to admit that Islam is the modern equivalent of National Socialism and deal with Muslims exactly as we dealt with the Nazis in WW2. It will come to that anyway - Islam will force it as per its doctrine - so we might as well take care of business now like responsible adults and take out the trash. This pretense that "anybody could be a terrorist" is insulting in the extreme to loyal Americans and gives courage to our enemy.
By the way, a bag search does exactly zero good in securing the subways.
You are correct. It will all come to this eventually. I believe, unfortunately, it will happen when more Americans are slaughtered in the US. On your last point, if I have a bomb in a bag, and I know it will be searched. I will not board the subway. I may go elsewhere, but it will deter me, and therefore secure that particular subway from my particular intent.
If you counted all the entrances to the subway system in NYC you'd realize that to secure all those entrances would cost more than operating the subway system in the first place. A terrorist with a bomb in a bag will simply enter at an unsecured entrance. Net result of the searches is that peaceful Americans get hassled while the terrorist is not deterred in the slightest.
couldn't we get the mexicans to do it if no Americans want to do it...
So can people with IDs. How does having an ID prevent one from killing people? Oswald had an ID. Atta had an ID. McVeigh had an ID.
McVeigh had an ID. He showed it when he rented the Ryder truck. Having one didn't stop him in any way did it?
The 7/7 bombers all had IDs in their possession. Checking their IDs, but not their backpacks, would not have stopped them.
Your points/assertions are very odd. Was the national guard at kent state? is the national guard the fed, or something else. The FBI has no right to pursue interstate crime? Are there federal tasks forces to fight gangs and organized crime? Does the Fed (in part) run the public school system? Could they stop a suspected perp on a road somewhere? I mean I could write 5000 words here providing examples of what the Fed does. So your statement that the Fed has no right, etc. is foolish and untrue. If you are trying to say they shouldn't have some of the 'rights' they do, I do not disagree.
If you want the libertarian point of view, which seems to be what you are trying to get at, the Fed is there to do only what we as individuals/groups cannot, ie military, road system, infrastructure, taxes, etc. On this I agree, I am a proponent of small government which stays out of my life, and of course the Fed oversteps their bounds sometimes. This is why we vote every 2/4 years.
Federal land - would you privatize los alamos, all military bases, state and federal parks? I believe the fed has a role here subject to limits which I stated above. I will not apologize as there is no reason to, I will say I respect your opinions, to me they seem a bit simplistic (sorry, I am sure you are tired of that by now, but it is the best way to put it.)
Yep all you good chilluns just reach in your pockets and pull out your ID's. That's a good boy. Uncle Sugar won't spank you this time.
Oh, by the way. Next week we'll be checking all ID's on the street and at your place of business.
Don't worry, we'll get around to your church soon enough.
There you go applying facts and logic to national security and issues of freedom. ;-)
That point is particularly important in all this "harrasing law abiding citzens to prevent terror" hoopla.
Why is it every freeper worth his login yells and screams about RKBA and how every citizen should be allowed to carry to work home and everywhere he goes but then about half of them turn around and decided that freedom of movement should only be allowed if the government can't come up with a reason to harass us.
If we could revive the founding fathers and bring them back to the present day I believe 2/3 of them would be actively plotting another revolution.
were their ID's checked, and if not, how do you know this would not have stopped them? Are you just taking a guess??
Had a bad experience somewhere? Or just chiming in in a sarcastic manner? sort of a hit and run tactic.
It doesn't. The people checking IDs couldn't tell you who was on that bus 5 minutes after checking.
Why not create a national DNA database of every male so that every rape can be solved? Or a national fingerprint database of EVERYONE, not just criminals, so that all crimes can be solved? Why not prohibit all adults, except relatives, from approaching a child within 100 feet so that no child is ever molested by a stranger? Or ban all pointed knives?
No hit and run tactic involved. I said my piece and I meant it.
So why should we imitate their government behavior then? If we abandon our commitment to freedom and liberty, then what makes us any different from them?
Read my tagline again. What do we value in the United States?
why would you suggest all these draconian measures? Just to be sarcastic? It's easy to list a lot of silly things like that....
Do IDs have "I have a bomb in my backpack" written on them?
Are you just taking a guess??
Aren't you?
