Rachel Carson, a driving force behind the modern environmental movement, grew up in a modest homestead in Springdale Borough near the Allegheny River. For the budding marine biologist, the river's waters were an early inspiration.
Now, more than four decades after Ms. Carson's death, her presence may return to those waters.
Allegheny County Council tomorrow will consider renaming the Ninth Street Bridge in her honor. If the resolution is approved, Ms. Carson would join Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol as namesakes for the three Downtown "Sister Bridges" that cross the Allegheny.
"This is long overdue," said Esther L. Barazzone, president of Chatham College, Ms. Carson's alma mater and home of the Rachel Carson Institute. "People realize that Rachel Carson is truly world class. We need to strengthen our connection to her."
Ms. Carson's 1962 book, "Silent Spring," criticized the harmful effects of pesticides, sparking a prolonged battle with the chemical industry. In 1970, six years after Ms. Carson's death, the federal government founded the Environmental Protection Agency. Two years later, the government banned the use of the pesticide DDT in the United States.
Rachel Carson is the one who helped get rid of DDT, and has caused much misery in places where malaris is rampant, due to her "activism".
So the bridge will now be called the "50 million dead Africans" bridge?
Isn't she the wacko who killed a lot of people (malaria)?
Yep, her activism has caused untold misery amongst those in malaria infested areas, and now she is being honored by the liberals in Pittsburgh.

Previous post on this. Just for your information.
What's more important, bird eggs or human lives? Sadly, many countries fell for the propaganda to save the birds.
The Pittsburgh papers need to buried by letters opposing this nonsense, each one noting the number of people killed by Malaria thanks to Rachel Carson.
Looks like a great bridge to hang a "DDT ban has killed millions of people in 3rd world countries - thanks Rachel" protest sign.
My fault and I have should have done a previous search.
Hard for me to find fault, I'm 2 for 10. The only reason I got 2 was because they were vanities!
Nice bridges, stupid names... with perhaps the except of Clemente.....
I don't care what they name it, it will still be the 9th street bridge... just like the other ones are still called by their street numbers.
Politicians.... can't keep from bankrupting the city with their incompetence.. but hey, lets rename bridges and buildings and streets...
HEY GUYS.. HOW ABOUT GETTING TAXES AND SPENDING UNDER CONTROL SO WE CAN HAVE SOME TRUE ECONOMIC GROWTH HERE!!! Something that hasn't happened in 50 years!!!
Dedication ceremonies will include setting setting the Allegheny River on fire. (just kidding, it was Cuyahoga that used to catch on fire).Seriously she helped make us aware that pesticides in the environment (See Silent Spring, DDT) were affecting the avian food chain from earthworms to robins to eagles and ospreys. What the fun loving enviros did with this is a horse of a different color.
We should name more structures after hacks.
I thought she was OPPOSED to pollution.
You shouldn't say such profanity to the powers to be in Pittsburgh. :^)
How aboutThe DDT Ban Is
Worse than AIDS
Carson needs to be remembered as the person responsible for the deaths of thousands of men, women and children due to her part in getting DDT banned. That reignited the Malaria pandemic throughout Africa, Latin America and the Orient.
Quite a legacy.
