MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley told a group of black Republicans that conservative social principles and economic opportunity would draw minority voters.

"There are so many things about the Republican Party that naturally fit into the minority community," Riley said Saturday, addressing about 100 people, four-fifths of them black, at an economic affairs summit of the Alabama Republican Council.

He said there is "not a place in Alabama you'll feel more at home, if you believe in entrepreneurship, than in the Republican Party."

Blacks in Alabama make up more than a quarter of the state's 4.5 million people and typically support Democratic candidates by more than a nine-to-one margin.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile, told the group that "Republican principles produce growth and growth produces jobs."

He also began a trend that continued throughout the day, saying the GOP's opposition to abortion and gay marriage should appeal to socially conservative black voters.

Too bad there is such a thing as a "black" caucus. Shouldn't be race-exclusive groups anywhere in the U.S., especially not in our halls of government. To think that "they" think in a special way is absurd. Can't wait till we stop counting, labeling, and boxing our citizens. Don't think I'll live that long.

Bingo!, dead on, Sir!

I want a

White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant-English Speaking-Left-Handed-Vast-Right-Wing-Conservative-Over 50 year old ... CAUCUS!

Then I will feel "included" as I fit these attributes as a fourth generation American (and can trace roots to Wales, England, and Germany.)

EXACTLY! Why is there no Asian caucus or female caucus or indian caucus? The idea that republicans are perpetuating this "it's a black thing" way of thinking is absurd.

When was the last time AP measured anything in fifths?

Last time I recall AP reporting in fifths: The Chappaquidic driver, Kennedy, did not consume 2 FIFTHS of Vodka prior to bopping, driving, crashing, drowning, swimming, etc....
