Edwin Edwards Gears Up for Latest Appeal [Ex LA GOV.]

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - After being delayed by Hurricane Katrina, arguments in former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards' latest appeal of his 2000 racketeering and fraud conviction are set for Tuesday in Houston.

The Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeals hearing had been set for September at the court's New Orleans headquarters.

But Katrina hit the city on August 29th. Federal prosecutors had to evacuate the city and did not have access to their files.

Meanwhile, the appeals court had to transfer operations to Texas.

Edwards was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for extorting money from applicants for riverboat casino licenses in Louisiana.

If his appeal fails, Edwards, who is 78, will not be released before July 2011.

Also involved in the appeal is Edwards' son Stephen Edwards, who is serving a seven-year sentence in the case, with his release set for November 2008.

Remember his excuse - They knew he was a crook when he was elected so they got what they wanted.

His son was the one that made the house of cards collapse. Not the brightest bulb on the tree.

It took long enough. There's an old joke in Louisiana:

Mike Foster, Buddy Roemer, and Edwin Edwards are all on a plane together, when the plane crashes. The ascend to heaven and are stopped by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, who says to them,

"Hey, the three of you were all governors of Louisiana, right? So you know about construction contracts and that kind of stuff? Well, we have need of your skills. You see, the Pearly Gates have fallen into disrepair, and we need you three to propose contracts to repair them."

Mike Foster stepped forward. "I'll do it for three thousand dollars. That's one thousand for parts, one thousand for labor, one thousand for profit."

Buddy Roemer stepped forward. "I'll do it for six thousand. That's two thousand for parts, two thousand for labor, and two thousand for profit, but you'll get the best parts and labor money can buy."

Edwin Edwards thought to himself for a moment, then stepped forward. "I'll do it for nine thousand. That's three thousand for you, three thousand for me, and then we get Foster to do it for three thousand."

Entering a court house prior to his conviction, Edwards was asked if he had anything to hide. "Oh yes, but nothing to do with this investigation," he said.

In the 16 years he was Louisiana's governor, he dodged two dozen Grand Jury investigations and was acquitted in two federal trials.

My favorite political quote: "The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy." Edwin Edwards,1983.
