Flesh Eating Bacteria- Necrotizing Fasciitis? It has an effect like what you are describing. But, I'm sure they would have identified it.

It was a pitchfork, so maybe talking to Veterinarians in the area would help. Maybe they've treated something i.e. wound infections in the livestock- that would give a clue? Just guessing.
