The CIA is not innocent
The Sanford Herald ^ | Mona Charen

Posted on 12/04/2005 5:48:11 PM PST by STARWISE

The Dec. 1 edition of The New York Times carried a story about the damage done to U.S. interests by the revelation that the CIA maintains a number of secret interrogation prisons for terrorists in Europe and elsewhere. (“Reports of Secret U.S. Prisons in Europe Draw Ire and Otherwise Red Faces.”)

Governments throughout the continent are now demanding explanations from the U.S. Department of State and otherwise strutting their outrage that the U.S. might be kidnapping suspected terrorists from European soil and transferring them to other nations.

How did this bit of classified information become public? It was a leak from within the CIA (to The Washington Post in that case) - and a breathtaking one at that. Though the agency has been steadily leaking damaging stories about the Bush administration since 9/11, it has now crossed a new threshold with a leak that severely damages CIA activities and arguably harms national security - all for the sake of crippling George W. Bush.

Most people outside the Beltway, as well as many within it, still think of the CIA as the home of swashbuckling hardliners who break all the rules in order to advance America's national interests. Not in this century.

As attorney and former counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee Victoria Toensing put it, “Derring-do is dead.” When she interviewed a CIA station chief in a major country, he bragged about the diversity of his operatives rather than their accomplishments. Political correctness reigns in the U.S. government at every level, and the CIA is no exception. The result is an agency that is conducting a steady leak campaign against President Bush designed to discredit the Iraq war and undermine the war on terror.

"The CIA is no longer in the business of political assassination.

It has, however, moved on to character assassination. The oversight committees of the Congress would do well to investigate."

Breathes there a Congress critter with any spine left?

I have no argument with Mona Charen, but this is the "Duh!" headline of the month, maybe the year.

If it proves that the CIA leaked this information, heads better roll quickly.....a full house cleaning, top to bottom is in order. Intelligence gathering be damned for now, just get rid of the crap inhabiting the Agency.

Please, for Pete's sake, fling open the doors of Area 51! Wait a minute....is there ANYTHING that SHOULD be kept SECRET any more? Let's just leak everything and I'll let the MSM tell me what to think.

I'm sure the leak came from within the CIA. Why? Because some individuals think that this operation ineffective. And, they (CIA) don't want to play the role of a 'Federal Bureau of Prisons'.

The CIA is a government bureaucracy; like any such bureaucracy it attracts a lot of mediocrities and lightweights. I wish it was more widely know just how political (internally) the agency can be.

As unpleasant as it is, we can live with the UN in New York.

What we can't live with is the CIA in Washington.

The CIA has too many traitors within. It should be disbanded and a new organization, on a new model, must be built.

Unlike most employers, the US Goverment has the law on its side to jail these leakers. A few years in a federal lockup for the worst of them would put a stop to this nonsense.

God bless him .. what he has to be dealing with must be a daily body slam. I thank God he's there .. and pray he can fully fumigate the place of the vermin. Did you see that Valerie Plame is officially gone from there as of this week? Wonder who called that shot ..

Really? I missed that little gem altogether. What, if any, official word?

Wonder who called that shot ..

I'd hate to hazard a guess, but I suspect Goss is bringing some much needed pressure to bear on Plame and her ilk. Her next stop, DNC???

Attacking the CIA in a frontal mode would probably not be successful. But, how about if GWB changed the CIA's mission to something meaningless and, in parallel, initiated a new agency to replace it; the good employees from the CIA could be pulled over and the rats could go down with the sinking ship, squeaking and squealing as the water closes over them.
