LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - CBS is trying to change the face of network news by luring Katie Couric, co-host of NBC's top-rated morning show "Today," to the evening news anchor seat vacated by Dan Rather, the Los Angeles Times said on Friday.
Citing senior editorial staffers at both networks, the Times said newly installed CBS News President Sean McManus had determinedly wooed Couric in recent weeks to take over as permanent anchor of the CBS Evening News and that Couric was seriously considering such a move.
CBS and NBC both declined comment on the story. Media reports began circulating in January that CBS executives had made overtures to Couric to lure her away from NBC to the CBS Evening News desk.
Taking Rather's spot would make Couric the first woman named as the sole permanent anchor of a major network evening newscast, unless ABC's Elizabeth Vargas beats her to the punch. Vargas, a "20/20," host, has filled in on a regular basis for the late Peter Jennings at ABC's World News Tonight and is regarded as a candidate to permanently replace him.
Connie Chung co-anchored the CBS Evening News with Rather for about 18 months in the 1990s, and Barbara Walters co-hosted ABC's newscast with Harry Reasoner for two years in the 1970s.
Veteran correspondent Bob Schieffer has served as temporary CBS News anchor since Rather stepped down in March, six months after coming under fire for a botched "60 Minutes II" report on President George W. Bush's military record.
Last month, McManus named "60 Minutes" veteran Rome Hartman as executive producer of the CBS Evening News, which has long trailed NBC Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight in the ratings.

See--it's already upsetting you :)
well, as with all elitist libs, she "thinks" she's smart.
Katie is about as likeable as a planters wart.
Younger viewers? Does 'Tinkie-Winkie' do news?
You got that right. I have to give Katie credit--she's fairly good doing interviews, from politicians to celebrities. But she would suck if she just sat behind a desk and read the news--that's what they pay Ann Curry for :)
Brent Bozell v. Mary Mapes

She looks like one of those weird fish that live at the bottom of the sea.
Yeah. That will make everyone think you have a real serious "news organisation" going.
See post 26 on this thread: Brent Bozzell versus Mary Mapes (face off on CSpan today)
If it is possible to sink BELOW zero, SeeBS just discovered how.
When Couric was hired to do the Today Show, ABC's Good Morning America was wining the ratings race.
After Deborah Norvel failed, it was decided that NBC would go after female viewers. The idea was to hire an attractive but quite aggressive female capable of dominateing both her male co-host and male guests. The idea was that a strong female would attract female viewers. It worked and still works to a degree. Katie of couse had taken the role to ideological extremes that has cost audience. Katie has feuded with male co-hosts and won. Men as a rule do not like Katie and her female appeal has declined as she has grown more aggressive and ideologically nasty.
But the dominate female role only works when she has a resisting male to best. A bullying Female is just a (word for female dog). Katie has forgotten how to win nicely. She can no longer attract a large female or male audiences. She is tending to alienate both. The role of interviewer is far different from news Anchor. She is and always was ill suited for an anchor position. Any skilled programmer ought to see that.
The problem with doing an anchor job on an evening news, as a (I will smile while I stab you in the back) female is her lack of trust. Viewers who do not see the world through her eyes will reject her. That is about 65 percent of the possible audience. She is at least as bad as Rather.
An anchor is supposed to tell the truth. To provide the information so that viewers can reach conclusions. That is what a majority of viewers want. Watch me use all the power of CBS to slay someone I don't like, will not garner male viewers. It will not garner female viewers. It will not garner viewers.
I don't understand CBS. They get rid of of one liberally biased news anchor and now, they want to replace him with an even MORE biased liberal. I guess they enjoy being consistently last in the ratings.
Thanks; will check it out. . .
I thought you meant, "wezel."
Wow, that is interesting but since we NEVER watch CBS or NBC we really don't care.
Brent Bozell versus Mary Mapes? Mapes is an absolute incoherent moron. Brent is brilliant and incredibly knowledgable. What the old saying about bringing a knife to a gunfight?
I think being mindless is a requirement.
Wait - has anyone gotten John McCain's thought on this.
The world cannot standby,, we must seek out his thoughts.
Perhaps he will consent to an interview?
I sure hope they get her. I never watch CBS. May this be her black hole.
Well, checking it out. . .but only catching glimpses as I am getting ready to go out. . .but it looks/feels painful. Too bad. . .Mark Levin should have taken her on. . .but then. . .it is Brent's show. . .sooooo. . .
