PHOENIX, Dec. 3 -- Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean offered a preview of the 2006 elections here Saturday with a blistering critique of President Bush's policies on Iraq and immigration and the Republicans' ethics scandals. But he warned Democrats they cannot expect to win next year without offering an agenda of their own.

Speaking at the fall meeting of the Democratic National Committee, Dean pledged that Democrats would offer tax policies aimed at middle-class voters, a plan to provide health insurance to all Americans, immigration proposals that offer a path to legalization for illegal immigrants, and defense policies that would protect the nation and expose the "hollow promises" of the Bush administration.

Dean warmly praised Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) for "standing up and telling the truth" about Bush's policies in Iraq, and suggested that the Pennsylvanian had offered a vision around which Democrats could rally.

There it is folks the foundation of the DNC's version of the "Contract With America". It will be interesting to see how the DNC can get all of it's interest groups to get on board. It seems that Amnesty for Illegals will be one of the pillars, which is progressive but probably political suicide.

Democrats held two organizing sessions for new bodies within the DNC, one called the "people of faith" group and the other open to veterans and military families. But apparently fearing potential divisions at the preliminary discussions, DNC officials closed both meetings to reporters, angering some DNC members.

Not an auspicious start. I can only imagine that the "people of faith" group consisted of Down East Unitarians and Back Slid Catholics.

2006 should be by all rights cake for the GOP, but the amazingly incompetent GOP PR machine will make it a race.

The Dean Crack Up Begins: January 11, 2004 - Yells at Dale Ungerer

OELWEIN, Iowa — Howard Dean (search) rejected a voter's request to be more neighborly and stop "mean mouthing" President Bush, saying Sunday someone needs to stand up to the president.

Dale Ungerer, a retiree from Hawkeye, Iowa (search), lectured Dean for nearly three minutes near the end of a forum aimed at winning voters for Iowa's Jan. 19 caucuses.

Ungerer accused Dean and other Democratic presidential hopefuls of dividing the country by bashing Bush instead of outlining their own plans and showing respect for authority.

"Please tone down the garbage, the mean mouthing, the tearing down of your neighbor and being so pompous," Ungerer told the former Vermont (search) governor and Democratic front-runner. "You should help your neighbor and not tear him down."

"George Bush is not my neighbor," Dean replied.

"Yes, he is," Ungerer said, to which Dean responded: "You sit down. You've had your say and now I'm going to have my say."

Oh, damn, it's too bad this guy's DNC chair and will not be running in '08. It would be the '84 election all over again.

It'll be interesting to see how the Dims hope to get any traction here. The "gay rights" crowd in the left will go wild if the Dims try to appeal to religious people.

Actually, that's news to the Dems; they think they should simply be in power by default, and that any Republican administration is simply a historical aberration that will soon correct itself. The idea that they actually have to have a platform that includes stuff besides a list of things they don't like is tertiary to that kind of thinking.

Saying Bush had used race and gay rights to divide the electorate, Dean said, "In 2006, it's going to be immigration; that's who he's going to scapegoat next." Legal status for illegals is definitely a part of Dean's political strategy.
