VIN SUPRYNOWICZ: If a black man is armed, is he a criminal?

An "old police tradition of requiring off-duty officers to carry their weapons -- 'always armed, always on duty' -- is being scaled back in police departments nationwide following the shootings of off-duty officers by colleagues who thought they were criminals," The Associated Press reported Nov. 28 in a story datelined Providence, R.I.

Officers need something else to identify them quickly
to other officers--like a badge worn around the neck which they can pull out, or even a T-shirt they can strip down to (superman?)

But it's in the interest of the public to have these officers armed and available, even when they are not on duty; our protection is in their hands.

My protection is in my own hands.

This subject is covered heavily by a decent police academy and any ajency with a decent post academy training curriculum.

We had a event last week where about 12 of us took down 3 in front of an apt. and we had one in plain clothes across the apt common area (all of this was outside.) His number one concern was not getting shot by a fellow officer and he was especially gratefull that no student officers (who would not konow him by sight) were on the scene.

It was all planned out and just before we could move in the subects started coming out of the apt..

Best thing to do when in plain clothes, off duty is not to get involved in the takedown or unless unavoidable. Period end of story. That being said, sometimes you have to act.

I like Suprynowicz. I don't like the photo with his columns in the Shotgun News, though. He looks like he just sucked on a lemon.

It depends on whether or not he's in a forest and there is anyone there to see him.

Step 1: Don Flame Suit.

Step 2: Statistically speaking, given that a disproportionate number of criminal acts, particularly those involving a firearm are committed by black men, then the answer is yes, statistically speaking.

That's great. A cop can kill you if you brandish a gun because you might try to shoot him with it. However, if a cop brandishes a gun and actually threatens to shoot you with it and you kill him you will go to jail for murder. What a perfect irony that cops are now killing cops for carrying guns.

--yep-----I have been given a "look" on occasion for pointing out that 12% of the population commits 60% of the criminal acts, in round figures--

Actually, it's more like 2-4%, not 12% (not all blacks commit crimes)

"Yes, pausing those extra few seconds may sometimes put your own life in danger."

I'm glad the author understands that a police officer risks his life anytime he confronts an armed person, and any hesitation on the officer's part to shoot can cost him his life. If the officer fails to shoot when he should have, it will cost him his life. But if he shoots when he shouldn't have, it will probably cost him his job. In an officer's career, if he is called upon to make very many of these shoot-no shoot decisions, sooner or later he will make a decision that will either cost him his life or his job.

We should all be grateful that we have LEOs in this country still willing to work under such conditions.

In 2001, two uniformed officers shot and killed an undercover detective when he pointed his gun at a suspected car thief in Oakland, Calif.

So charge em with aiding and abetting.

What are these knuckleheads going to do if they ever let the citizens carry out there.

The more I think about this the more I think this is purely a union issue.

Some union guy has figured out that the off duty cops with guns deter crime and arrest crimminals. This is work for no pay. Ergo don't let them do the work. Realizing this will require an expansion of the number of onduty officers and create more union jobs and/or more overtime pay.

The "ununiformed folks with guns are dangerous" is just the excuse to pull this off and the tying it to trying to save black folks is just to make those who oppose this have to answer charges of racism.

In everything "follow the money".
