U.S. cancels food aid to North Korea
Washington Times ^ | 12/3/05 | Nicholas Kralev

The Bush administration has canceled a planned shipment of 25,000 tons of food aid to North Korea later this month, citing concerns that the food will not reach those who need it.

"We still think there are serious humanitarian needs in North Korea, but we cannot continue to supply food if we cannot even minimally assure that it will reach its intended recipients," the State Department said yesterday.

The U.N. World Food Program (WFP), which distributes foreign aid, has been ordered by the North Koreans to cut most of its staff there by the end of December, a move that will substantially reduce its ability to disburse and monitor aid shipments.

Washington sent the first half of a 50,000-ton pledge for 2005 in the spring and had planned to deliver the rest, until Pyongyang's recent decision to expel the majority of the WFP personnel.

"We have not procured the 25,000 tons originally scheduled to have been shipped later this month, due to uncertainties about whether the [WFP] emergency feeding operation, to which it was to be delivered, would still be in place to receive it and monitor its distribution," the State Department said.

I think they do realize it, but without an organized, well-armed mob, what can they do?

You're right, and its hard to organize and arm a mob when everyone is starving and the only ones with arms are the military.

It's a shame it has taken this long to quit shipping food to feed the North Korean Army.

Playing nice will NEVER win the still raging cold war with NK. IT hasn't worked for Cuba, and it certainly won't work in this case.

Great news, stop proping up dictatorships!

I read an article where it stated the foreign sailors were not allowed to even set foot on land.

Actually, I'm sure a lot of them know it, and a lot of them are in labor camps starving to death or doing everything they can to avoid being sent to the same camps.... that and hunting for fat rats.

So; we're being mean and heartless denying food to those poor starving people who would be denied food and starved even if we sent it?

Just getting ready for the demo/du/progressive/liberal slant.

The people realize they are starving because of the nut case dictator they have.

They also know that they are unarmed and the military there is brutal in horrid ways.

Its not above Psycho Jong to kill people just to set an example, and a big slaughter would please him just fine.
