Second anniversary of slain federal prosecutor Jonathan Lunas death to be marked by vigil at murder scene
Friends and supporters of slain federal prosecutor Jonathan Luna will mark the second anniversary of his death, on December 4, 2005, with candles, prayers, and calls for a broader investigation into the handling of his case.
Observers will meet at 2 pm on Sunday, December 4, 2005, at the scene of Lunas mysterious death, at the Sensenig and Weaver Well Drilling Co., at 1439 Dry Tavern Road, in Denver, PA, outside of Lititz, in Lancaster County.
Concerned citizens will call for a broad and complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lunas death, as well as an open examination of the current, fruitless handling of his case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Luna mysteriously vanished from his desk at the federal courthouse in Baltimore, Maryland, shortly before midnight on December 3, 2003. The next morning his body was found face down in small creek. He had been stabbed 36 times.
In the hours before his death, Luna was engaged in preparing a plea deal for a case involving a FBI informant who had run amok in Baltimore. The plea deal served to prevent a court-ordered investigation of the FBI and Justice Departments mishandling of the informant. Since Lunas death, the often-times unlawful mishandling of informants by the FBI has become a growing national concern.
In the hours before his death, Luna had repeatedly questioned the legality of the plea deal, since it served to unlawfully forgive a drug murder. Luna never completed the questionable plea agreement before he vanished. Luna left behind, on his desk, the unfinished plea deal in his laptop, as well as his cell phone, and his eyeglasses, which his friends say he needed in order to see to drive.

Do you think that FR might now have papers served on it requiring all information that FR has about you, e.g., registration information, posts and e-mails.
Last I heard it was a case of:
1)Little stab wounds like used in an interrogation.
2)Some rough gay play.
3)Some kind of suicide
Maryland used to have the best government money could buy, now they won't stay bought.
Such a strange case. I always hoped it would get "solved".
Yeah... the guy lived about a mile or two away from me, but I never knew him and don't remember seeing him around. This is a very strange case that seems to have been forgotten, even around here.
I beleive the Maryland FBI tried to classify Luna's death as suicide, but the coroner in Pennsylvania refused to sign off as a suicide and classified it as a murder.
Plus there was $36,000 in cash evidence that disappeared
inside the federal courthouse in downtown Baltimore that the FBI have never solved.
This $36,000 was part of a trial proceeding in which Luna was prosecuting.
I've spent almost 13 years investigating political corruption in Maryland and even more so today.
I don't think it will ever be solved either, certainly not if the FBI are investigating.
The murder of a federal prosecutor is real serious business, for this case to go unsolved and virtually swept under the rug
makes it seem even more strange.
Agree. I'm not sure what turns the investigation has taken and what effort has been mustered in terms of manpower on this case, but the media has all but forgotten about it.
The State of Maryland recently indicted and convicted Gilbert Sapperstein, an alleged close personal friend of the Maryland Attorney General, Joseph Curran Jr. for stealing approx. $3.5 million dollars from the Baltimore school system.
Gilbert Sapperstein pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 18 months in a MD. State prison.
Sappestein spent approx. 24 days in jail and was mysteriously released on house arrest after only a couple of weeks in jail.
Nobody can figure out how Gilbert Sapperstein managed to spend only 24 days in jail of an 18 month sentence.
