Choose life over party platform

Conservatives and Republicans are anti-abortion while Democrats and liberals are for abortion, right?

This conventional wisdom has not come about haphazardly. If you ask people why they identify with one party or the other, abortion (or "women's rights," as liberals prefer to call the issue) is usually at the top of the list. In fact, sometimes abortion is the sole issue people use to determine their party preference, however faulty that might be.

That's probably because abortion is a topic people get passionate about as early as middle or high school long before they have opinions about taxes, Social Security, welfare or growth management.

As teens turn into legal voters, their thoughts about abortion drive them straight into a Democratic or Republican tent, where they stay put for years, however awkward the fit.

So passionate are people about abortion that a lot of voters hold their noses when it comes to a politician's other beliefs, so long as he or she votes their way on abortion issues. Given how little so many elected positions have to do with laws surrounding abortion, "abortion voting," as I call it, can be unreliable and even comical especially for positions at city and county levels of government.

Democrats for Life of America is a refreshing break from the conventional wisdom, or should I say conventional assumption, when it comes to abortion. The group is reminding people that not all Democrats are pro-choice. Some members wear buttons that say, "43% of Democrats can't be wrong," referring to a December 2004 Zogby poll that found 43 percent of Democrats agreed with the statement that abortion "destroys a human life and is manslaughter."

The 95/10 plan to reduce abortions that is being pushed by Democrats for Life deserves bi-partisan support.

I've seen Democrats for Life booths before. I can only imagine the grief they take.

The Washington Times (11/30/05 also had a great article about the 95/10 Plan http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20051129-101234-3348r.htm

For a single women, there is solid basis of socioeconomic self interest in being pro-abortion. That is why single women will always be massively pro-abortion.

At the very least, Democrats for Life, much like the Log Cabin Republicans and other groups that swim against their party's tide, is making people rethink their allegiances to parties and putting principles back in focus. That's progress no matter the ideology.

This is the author's lame attempt to get people to look past their abortion position and become Democrats. They are desperate for members in their party. After 30 years of treating unconditional support for abortion as the holy grail, the party is realizing that has not been a successful strategy.

There is more to this than just thoughts that turn a woman to the Democrat Party; it is their actions that turn them. When any woman has an abortion and kills her baby just because the baby is inconvenient, she knows in her heart that she has committed a mortal sin. These women desperately need some authority figure to tell them that they have done no wrong, and Democrats fill this need.

One could even say that every time a baby is murdered in the womb, a Democrat is born.

Somehow these good folks need to gain some measure of control over their own party before they come to us asking that we hop in there with them. When the essence of their platform is, in fact, the most evil lie that has ever been foisted on the American public, then no one has any reason to believe that they'd ever tell the truth about anything. There is a dying demographic among the Democrats which consists of the remnant of FDR party loyalists. I know a few and it's almost funny if it weren't so poignantly sad. Many, in fact, most, are serious traditional Catholics who are fervently pro-life, but somehow believe that they can get their party to change from its agenda of death. They can't change a lifetime of party loyalty, but they're elderly people. They're good people and I won't be glad to see them pass on, but the fact is that they will.

It's somewhat ironic that the Democrat party's agenda of death is what will bring about the much-needed death of the party itself.

I see it a little differently. If a million Democrat children weren't destroyed in the womb every year, the Dems would have been by far the majority party long ago. Take away abortion, where Dems wipe out their young and drive Christians out of their party, and a Republican couldn't get elected to dog-catcher in this country.

Republicans are vilified for trying to save Democrats from themselves.

The Wall Street Journal calls this the "Roe Effect." It's not unreasonable, by their analysis, that legalized abortion contributed to Gore losing Florida so narrowly in 2000.

Even if 10% of the would-be babies who were to be born between 1973 and 1984 made it into the world, it's not hard to see the 2004 election turning out differently.
