Scratches no match for Nissan's new car paint

Nissan Motor said Friday it had created a paint that repairs scratches on its own, restoring a car's surface to normal within a week.

The Japanese automaker said the paint contains a newly developed resin that can stop scratches from marking the car's outer layer.

Wear and tear due to everything from fingernails to roadside objects will disappear in one day to one week depending on the temperature and the seriousness of the scratch, Nissan said in a statement.

The "Scratch Guard Coat" paint, which protects for three years, will debut on a sports-utility vehicle which is set for a makeover, Nissan said.

The paint also helps prevent scratches in the first place. Nissan said a vehicle with the paint suffers only one-fifth of the usual abrasions caused by car-washing machines -- the main culprit for scratches.

Sure, but will it work on crows feet?

Big fat hairy deal. Plymouth had a car that could do that back in the 1950s.

If it works... sweet.

A pos keyed my Bullitt GT Mustang about 3 years ago (front left quarter to back left quarter)... $1,000 in damage.

If I would have caught the perp in the act, he/she would have experienced a little NY "justice" - has to do with a baseball bat to the knee caps... so the next time the perp decided to ruin other people's property, he/she would be doing it from a wheel chair.

That's my soapbox rant. Please drive through.

Maybe now I can put bumperstickers on my vehicle without fear of retribution from the "tolerant":

The real question is whether or not it'll provide a decent paint job. I haven't seen a new car in the past 10 years or so that didn't have orange peeled paint. Folks just don't know what a flat, shiney paint job is anymore.

Ain't it the truth. They had a rust colored substance that would appear within days of a scratch, and completely replace it. Even faster if it was raining. My 55 Chevy did the same thing.

Yup, that's what happened to me at the park

When I was walking my dog at a local park I noticed "Bush Sucks"
and Bush Lies" scrawled in dirt on trail
When I got back to my Bush/Cheney, I love Gitmo stickered car
the little commie libs cowards had keyed it

I would just LOVE to catch someone doing that!

The government eliminated real paint for the sake of "the children".

I've used 1SHOT oil based paint for many years. I do hand painted signs. Now, here in California, I have to order it, and the price has doubled.

This paint has a long working time, levels beautifully, and is tough after it cures. But, much of it contains LEAD, so if you eat it, you could die.

Guess what, I'm gonna die someday anyway. The government should not be working to eliminate products that did the job well, and lasted.

I have owned Nissan products for the past 20 years and although I can't claim to remember the paint on the early ones I can tell you the 2 sitting in my garage (1999,2001) certainly do not have orange peel nor did any of the new models I looked at over the past 3-4 months in my search for a newer model to replace the '99.

Little old ladies do that with shopping carts as well.

I caught one doing that to someones car. She was too lazy to take the cart and put it where it belonged, instead shoved it between two other cars, leaving a scratch down the entire side of one of them.

Being a good citizen, I took down her license number and gave it to the car's owner when he showed up. A few months later a received a bottle of whiskey. Apparently he had her charged for causing willful damage and sued for damages.

Being old is no excuse for being ignorant and damaging other peoples property.

The Nissan Altima is, imo. the very best value, dollar for dollar in the automotive world. As a former employee of Nissan and being somewhat familiar with the engineering of the car. I personally wouldn't own anything else in that particular class of automobile. Even today they are using the same 4 cylinder engine they have used since the early 1970's, albeit tweaked and tweaked again over the years. It also happens to be the engine they use in their 4 cyl trucks, or at least it was until about 4 years ago when I stopped following these things. Our 1999 has over 90,000 miles and all we have done is tires (1 set) and brake pads other then the routine oil changes and an alignment now and again.
