Texas Set To Execute "Juan" The Deer That Believes It's A Dog

Deer That Thinks It's A Dog Set To Die

PORT MANSFIELD - A tame deer that apparently thinks it's a dog is scheduled to be put to death because of aggressive behavior, officials said.

The young buck appeared at the home of Sally and Tom KenHagen last year, and they named it Juan Deer, but he's getting hard to handle now that he's bigger.

"He thinks he's a dog," Sally KenHagen told the Valley Morning Star in Friday's editions. "He was always gentle ... but now he's got antlers and he's scary. He even rammed against me."

Other Port Mansfield residents said the deer has followed them while they walked their dogs and occasionally has become aggressive.

"My dog was afraid of him and ran around behind me," resident Bill Ferguson said. "That made the deer mad, that I was between him and my dog."

Ferguson said the deer then butted his leg, leaving a large bruise and breaking the skin on his forearm.

"There have been several incidents with that deer," said James Lindsey, a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden.

Lindsey said officials considered other options before euthanization, including releasing it into the wild. But the deer wouldn't know how to get food because people had always fed it.

The decision is upsetting to Sally KenHogan, who is urging authorities to reconsider.

"Why don't they dart him and put him on a ranch?" she said. "Some ranches will pay money for a healthy deer. ... Juan wouldn't purposely hurt anybody."

GOOD VENISON STEW

Serves 4-6 people
2 lbs cubed (1") venison
4 large potatoes peeled and cubed
4 - 5 large carrots, cut into 1" pieces
2 large onions cut into med size pieces
2 Tablespoons salt
1/2 Tablespoon pepper
3 whole bay leaves
3 beef bouillon cubes
pinch of sage
pinch of garlic

Place all veggies in large stock pot add 1 Tablespoon salt, 1/2 Tablespoon pepper, pinch of sage and garlic cover with water. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to simmer.

Now in another large sauce pan or stock pot cover venison with water and add 1 Tablespoon salt.

Bring up to a boil, then reduce heat.

Turn down to simmer for another 10 min.

Drain venison and rinse briefly then combine it with the veggies. Add 3 beef bouillon cubes, and 3 bay leaves.

Bring to a simmer, adding a little water as needed.

This stew is best cooked for several hours or even all day so start it early in the day.

You see, the deer thinks that it's a dog because it has low self-esteem. He feels exploited by the capitalist system and threatened by the war-monging George W. Bush. He's wary of the neo-cons around the President, because the neo-cons are really Jooooos. It also has no role models.

That explains that.

Better Venison Stew

Use a cup of red wine and some real beef stock instead of a bullion cube.

Sure, shoot the deer when it's that stupid family who's at fault.

Many people pay those ranchers to shoot deer, too.

I didn't get the impression that the deer was "mean." Sounds as if he is like most large animals with horns and sharp hooves. They can be dangerous without being mean. A deer, cow, goat, etc. can injure you by moving it's head or stepping on your foot.

Maybe Juan just needs a mate other than human. A mate could take some of his abuse as long as it was for a good purpose.

Curious.

It's like he's trying to jump over the dog but can't quite make it.

Texas? What the heck is going on? I could understand if this were Massachussetts, but Texas?

Deer problem. Shoot deer. Eat deer. No more deer problem.
