Jimmy Carter's Son 'Listens' for Campaign Cash

Jack Carter, the son of former President Jimmy Carter, has launched a Web site soliciting donations and support for a potential challenge to Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.

Carter called the site part of his "listening tour" designed to gauge Nevadans' reactions to his Democratic candidacy, which would be the Las Vegas investment consultant's first personal foray in politics. He previously campaigned for his father.

"One of the things you listen for is how are people going to contribute," he said Tuesday.

Carter, 58, said he won't officially announce his decision until after the first of the year, but said response to the site, which was posted last week, was "excellent." He does not have to disclose contributions until January.

The Web site includes a biography detailing the former president's oldest son's move from "Navy brat" to peanut farm hand to business consultant "fascinated by the art of hedging - the use of futures markets to protect profit margins."

Carter addresses his own stint in the Navy briefly.

"By mutual agreement, I and the Navy decided we were not meant for each other and I was released at the end of 1970 with an administrative discharge," he writes.

Carter was discharged from the military after he admitted using drugs.

"I went into the Navy voluntarily. I served my country well, I thought. When they asked people if they'd done drugs I told them that I had. When they asked me to leave, I was not sad about it," he said in an interview. "I have never lied about it."

Carter doesn't appear to have an opponent for the Democratic nomination, although rumors that Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is eying the Senate seat have circulated.

Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirsten Searer says the party supports a Carter candidacy.

"We have a strong potential candidate in Jack Carter and we look forward to the race," she said. "As far as we know, no one else is interested."

Carter is coming from far behind in the money chase.

Ensign, a first-term senator, has reported $2.1 million in campaign contributions and has said he's prepared to raise as much as $10 million if the race heats up.

Ensign has the IQ of a three toed sloth. Harry Reid has strong control of Ensign. Reid will not support the Carter campaign to the extent Carter might have a chance.

It's funny because the Dems actually think they have a shot at this seat.

I didn't know Jimmy Carter had a son. I though Amy was his only child.

He has more than one son.

Carter was the worse President in my lifetime, along with Clinton. I never want to see another Carter in any manner, shape or form in any elected position. Nor do I want to see another Clinton in any manner, shape or form.

"my ex-president has worked with your organization" (or something like that), and the response to that comment was lots of smiling people nodding their heads.

What were you doing at a Muslim fund raiser meeting?

I think it was on Dennis Miller's CNBC show before the election. He doesn't have anymore personality than his day -- which means none.

Safe. The only candidates the Dems can find to oppose Ensign are nut cases. (peanut cases)

Yes, but it looks like the grace of the victim softened his sentence:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. - A teenage grandson of former President Jimmy Carter was sentenced Friday to 30 days of house arrest and 36 months probation as part of a plea agreement involving the theft of a videogame console.
Jeremy Carter, 18, of Peachtree City, was arrested in December after being caught inside the home of a former friend. Police said they found less than an ounce of marijuana in his shoe and smelled alcohol on his breath.
The victim did not want Carter to go to jail, which District Attorney Scott Ballard said "considerably" affected the outcome of the case.
Carter's burglary charge was reduced and he pleaded guilty to theft by taking, a misdemeanor.
"If you are convicted of burglary here, you go to prison for three years," Ballard said.
Carter is the son of Annette and Jeff Carter, Jimmy Carter's youngest son.
Ballard said Carter will also perform 100 hours of community service and undergo drug counseling.
