Really a tale of two cities in Costa Mesa. Doesn't surprise me to see this happening there.

You have the Newport Beach overflow, and then you have a small portion of the city that is Santa Ana overflow. The former affluent, the latter filled with illegal immigrants. Didn't seem like the gangs ran as much in Costa Mesa as they did in Santa Ana, but there were a few sketch places.

The whole immigration problem should be taken out of the hands of the federal government, which has demonstrated that it doesn't feel like enforcing the law.

Instead, deportation should be made an option to juries, binding on the judge.

A 1996 law allows state and local jurisdictions to enforce federal immigration laws

I guess better late than never. It always amazes me what laws are enforced and what aren't.

The chief didn't take a position on whether Mansoor's plan is a good idea, but he said he's concerned it could spread his staff too thin.

"We're at capacity, so any time something is added, we have to look at something else that we may not do.... I do have questions about whether these new duties will cause us to be concerned about our response times and allow us to follow up in an expeditious manner on claims and crime reports," Hensley said.

Councilwoman Katrina Foley said she has the same concern, and she added that immigration enforcement is absolutely a federal responsibility.

Just off the top of my head, I could think of a few responses to the hand-wringers. First, the Costa Mesa police would be already on scene at a crime or crime investigation, doing what cops do - if during the course of that investigation the cops get some indication that a person is an illegal then they would go the one step further and hold that person for ICE. Second, my suggestion, if they think their cops are spread too thin - let the schools take over the DARE program; afterall, DARE is education and not a policing matter. I am sure the cops are also assigned a lot of other social service type jobs. Let the cops do law enforcement, and let the social workers and teachers do the SW and teaching.

"Police could enforce immigration law"

It used to be, until the 1980s, that they did.

Then, when America was confronting the Communists in El Salvador, Dianne Feinstein (then mayor of San Francisco) announced that San Francisco would be a sanctuary for illegal immigrants, and would NOT assist the Border Patrol or INS. This idea caught on with the trendily leftist, and spread across the country.

Simple solution: require that, in order to receive ANY federal assistance of any sort, the state and local government must have their LEOs provide full and complete cooperation with BP/ICE, requiring certification by the senior agent in the region.

"It's something that I believe the public wants to see done, and it's something that needs to be done," Mansoor said. "Illegal immigration is something that needs to be addressed at all levels."

Even an effective mechanism to keep these illegals out after they have been ejected, unless led by the undiluted and unrestrained leadership of the President of the United States will be futile!
