LA Wonders: What's Wrong?
Automotive News ^ | November 28, 2005

When one little company like Nissan North America pulls out of a great big city like Los Angeles, does anyone even notice?

They do when Nissan is the 80th corporation to do so since 2002.

The automaker's announcement that it will leave L.A. for Nashville, Tenn., may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Just days after the announcement, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. fired off a letter to California's legislators, urging them to appoint a task force to consider changes in state tax and employment laws to help reduce business costs.

The 80 departing corporations are taking 13,000 jobs with them, the group says. And in an alarming shift, it warns that the corporate departures no longer are moving just midlevel jobs; they are claiming headquarters and r&d jobs, too.

You trying to figure out what's wrong with others is a real hoot. You think nothing's wrong in SoCal, so why are you involved in politics?

That seems a bit of a conflict. What's the matter, don't you even believe what you're saying?

Yes, well it must be hell to be so out of touch with what's going on in the southland. Course I don't beleive you anymore than you do. By your own account, you're out there trying to fix it? Why?

I voted for him too, but I didn't think it would be bliss. He's lived down to my expectations, but I thought there could have been worse outcomes.

You are right that he's been a disappointment.

You should see LAX. Four jets on approach every few minutes, almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with thousands pouring in daily. Now they want to expand some of the runways. LOL. I don't know what the attraction is, but it is anything but an exodus. I personally wished they all go to Denver

:)

FR's curmudgeon. How quaint.
Did we ever find out if there if there is anything about L.A. you like. Otherwise check out 80 and 82. They are right up YOUR alley!

Yes. Just look at what's happenening in Nevada. Because of the influx of people to Las vegas, Clark County is blue and almsot causes the whole state to be blue.

Do you live in San Diego now?

Just outside the north city limits in a town that reminds me a lot of what San Diego was like in the 50's. I devoted my young life to finding a way to get the hell out of S.D. to somewhere less boring. After 30 years of "less boring", 'hickville' looks just fine now, thank you.

I don't think it's a simple as taxes. NYC has taxes out the wazoo and is booming.

That's because it's the city. Try going Upstate. Totally different ball game. People businesses leaving/left by the droves. Xerox HQ did so what, two decades ago now.

Please tell us why you're involved in local politics? I'd really like to know why if everything is bliss. Why not a single word of agreement about what SoCal has become, but none the less you're out there trying to fix it. Tell us what "IT" is.

I've been honest with you, now you fess up. If you think things are blissful, why are you involved in politics at the local level?

This isn't the San Fernando valley of the 1970s or 1980s. It's in many places very run down, with iron bars surrounding the homes. The streets are filthy, the cars are run down and in a number of places the sineage is in Spanish. The business infrastructure is crumbling. Drive down Van Nuy's boulevard. Drive down Victory. Take a good look.

We have a subway to nowhere in LA. It starts in LA and dumps into San Fernando valley. Eh, what's a few billion among friends. Over 50% of adult males in Los Angeles are not proficient in reading or writing english. Fully one third if not more by now, of the children in the LAUSD are the children of illegal immigrants. Our hospitals have had to cut survices to the bone so they wouldn't go belly up from treating those unable to pay. Other healthcare services are in the same boat. No, they haven't just gotten worse for the non-citizen, they've gotten worse across the board.

Last time I was in LA was the late 60's - and it was beautiful. What you're describing sounds like hell on earth. What happened?

By your own account, you're out there trying to fix it? Why?

You know you and I have met several times. You are politically active I have no doubt ... so am I. L.A. will never be the city my parents loved, my grand parents loved, my great grand parents loved. Most cities change and usually with a huge influx of citizens. I live here, I love it, I'm trying to make it better. Are you living here and hating it?

LA being a hub headed out of the nation, not everyone coming in is LA bound. People have family here and visit. Others are here on business. Some come on vacation.

Did you think everyone was disembarking and buying a home?

I didn't think so.

This thread is too much. I live in LA(Lakewood), and it's a pain in the ass, but it has it's pleasures. It has changed a great deal since I arrived in '87, and I expect more painful changes to come. This does not require people from other states to gangbang SoCal residents for their lack of wisdom, or sanity.

I've lived in NYC, Philly and Miami, and each was equally difficult in it's own way. Good with the bad. Every place has its shortcomings, and it would be nice if you just relax now and then.

Merry Christmas to all.

I lived there over 40 years and that's not what I would call it.

I lived there for 7 years, until 2 months ago. While there I got sued for $2 million by a real estate broker (she stole jewelry from us so we sued her, went on the Joe Brown show and won, then she sued us for "slander").

That was a sampling of the fun I had in LA. We're still cleaning up stuff, like a $900 impound fee for a car we traded in a year ago (was impounded 6 months after the sale to a dealer as trade-in who went out of business), a criminal investigation against our son for some ficticous road rage claim. 3 years ago he was sued for a bogus claim by a "Mama Rose Boston" which we were forced to settle. The list goes on and on.

During my prior 40 years in Pennsylvania I never had such stuff to deal with.

So. Cal mountains suck!! Just a bunch of brush and sickly trees!!

LOL! You obviously have never been to the Sierras.

Some of these comments here are really over the top. Mass exodus? The mountains suck?

Now not to say the CA does not have it's problems, but I can assure you the mountains do not "suck", and there is no mass exodus. (Unfortunately)
