When one little company like Nissan North America pulls out of a great big city like Los Angeles, does anyone even notice?
They do when Nissan is the 80th corporation to do so since 2002.
The automaker's announcement that it will leave L.A. for Nashville, Tenn., may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
Just days after the announcement, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. fired off a letter to California's legislators, urging them to appoint a task force to consider changes in state tax and employment laws to help reduce business costs.
The 80 departing corporations are taking 13,000 jobs with them, the group says. And in an alarming shift, it warns that the corporate departures no longer are moving just midlevel jobs; they are claiming headquarters and r&d jobs, too.
That bunch of pro-business Republicans, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., may as well be talking to a brick wall. The Democrats who have destroyed California are utterly incapable of fixing the place and they couldn't care less what those mean pro-business Republicans want.
However, don't make the mistake of thinking that we back here in the Midwest don't have acess to museums, theater, or concerts. We have quite a nice cultural offering here in Indianapolis, and our housing costa are about 1/5 of yours.
Which is really unfortunate. This place used to be wall to wall middle class U.S. citizens who were productive and made great wages. Those were the days.
I know the rest of the US is not living in the middle ages. But there are distinct advantages to living in the city ... even mid-western cities. But I have a great job, a wonderful home and appreciate the ability to leave the house at any hour and there is something going on.
There is a tendancy for people (even Freepers) to bash large American cities. Those people who like living in other parts of the US ... terrific. But I like it here and I have good solid reasons.
Yet you chose not to leave.
Well, yes, after living here for 37 years, I'm not willing to pick up sticks and start over. I was born here 54 years ago, and I don't see why I should leave rather than decent policies be enacted that would improve the standard of living.
What company would not want to be located in Mayor VillaReconquista's socialist workers' paradise?
You're going to wait a LONG time.
In the meantime there is a cottage industry (even on FR) in bashing and hating Los Angeles, California, USA. I can't think of even one reason to join them.
And I rejoice when an L.A. basher finally calls it quits.
I often say I'd move elsewhere if the Pacific Ocean could go with me. I love the Pacific in a way that's hard to explain to others.
However, it's also true the the cost of doing business in this state is skyrocketing thanks to the policies of our Marxist legislature. Even the crown jewel of the Left, the movie and entertainment business, is shipping jobs elsewhere by the boatload.
Count me among those who think things must get a lot worse before the electorate in this state finally gets it.
This time of year I see a couple of Christmas programs, do a lot of shopping, and cook in advance of hosting Christmas Eve. Oh, and we are going to the Builder's Association Christmas dinner.
Quite the social butterflies, aren't we? LOL! All of the stuff to do in your city would be wasted on me. I do visit the museums here, and those are quite nice. But other than that, I pretty much work in the garden and tend to grandchildren.
It's nice that there are various places to live for the various types of people there are. It's a shame, however, that more isn't done to make larger cities as liveable as they were 50 years ago.
I read on Autoextremist.com that 300 workers of Nissans 1600 have signed on to move to Tennesee....looks like a lot of new work for TN.
The Nissan workers have the first couple weeks of January to visit then decide if they are coming. The State of TN is paying for all the airfare and hotels.
But, whatever makes you happy eh?!
Look, sing the song of bliss if you like. I don't really mind.
While you chortle about every middle-income person that does leave, their doing so makes it harder for California to recover.
Laugh on...
Thanks.
I'm not laughing. But I refuse to be a part of the problem. And people who grouse are part of the problem.
I am politically active and I do what I can to change things ... but I refuse to be one of the multitudes of Freepers rejoicing over how much they hate L.A.
Grouse on.
Be smug if it pleases you. But better to leave the state to those of us who like living here and still care.
You must have just moved here by the sound of your incoherent posts. You can stick you head in whatever you like, but by just about any standard Southern California has taken a major blow since the 1970/80s. Acting like all is peachy is just juvenile, not productive by any means.
To fix something you must first accept that it needs fixing. And you must try to get others to understand that it needs fixing.
Now go on your merry way and try to convince everyone that Southern California has never been better. Sheesh!
Still care? You refuse to admit that anything's wrong. Care?
