Governor (Arnold) taps ex-Davis aide as chief of staff (Gay rights activist married her partner)

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger -- attempting to regain his political footing after a devastating special election defeat this month -- has begun a shakeup of his administration by replacing his chief of staff with a former state Democratic Party official and top adviser to former Gov. Gray Davis, Democratic and Republican sources said Tuesday.

The hiring of Susan Kennedy, widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans in Sacramento as a workhorse operative for Davis, is expected to be announced officially as early as today. The move could kick off major protests from conservative Republicans.

Appointed by Davis to the California Public Utilities Commission in 2003, Kennedy had made her name as a political operative as the head of the California branch of the National Abortion Rights Action League. A longtime gay rights activist, Kennedy married her partner, Vicki Marti, in a 1999 ceremony in Hawaii attended by many California political insiders.

...many "scorched earth" conservatives did not show up to back Arnold's ballot initiatives.

A bogus claim--the numbers say otherwise. Props 73 and 75 (the most conservative measures) passed in 33 and 34 counties, respectively (of a total 58 counties). Props 73 and 75 also faired the best of all initiatives and came very close to passing (47% yes votes). At the same time, Arnold alienated the unions at every step ("kick teachers butts", etc.), while failing to SELL his initiatives. As a result, despite strong Conservative turnout, he did not motivate the centrist Dems and Independents (those that elected him) to come out in force. His efforts, instead, strongly motivated the Union thugs to come out and vote against his measures.

Historically, voter turnout in California's special elections has ranged between 36 percent and 47 percent, (except for the recall election which drove 61% to the polls). 48% showed up for this election. Unfortunately, they were predominantly those motivated by Schwarzenegger--the unions.

Uh, Arnie, that ain't the way to regain your footing, buddy. You'll sink in the quicksand a whole lot faster hiring 'rats and Grayed-out Davis flunkies.

I'm looking forward with interest when our two favorite CAGOP shills hit the Topic later this evening.

Their spin will be somewhere between "Give him a chance to regain the center or we're all lost" to the now famous "He's playing rope-a-dope with them" .

So they owe him even less and the clowns he is pandering to STILL won't support him.
Bye, Bye, Arnie.

Bet he lets "Tookie" off, too.

This was all precluded in February of this year at the state CAGOP convention where they stupidly endorsed Arnold prematurely!!!

HERE was my prior round-up of that news

Think he'll pardon Tookie to get him some more goodwill from the left?

well, let me play devil's advocate here - many "scorched earth" conservatives did not show up to back Arnold's ballot initiatives. he owes them nothing at this point. So he makes this move, and don't be surprised if he grants clemency to Tookie to make a play for african american votes. the same people who don't like these measures, have already shown they will not vote to support Arnold - he's got very little to lose.

And so Arnold falls prey to the sort of sellout that comes from thinking if he can't get what he wants done by being who he is, maybe he can still do some good by being who they want him to be. Bad news for Arnold. EVERYBODY hates a sellout.

the ballot initiatives were worthy of conservative support on their own - regardless of whether Arnold was a "RINO". the votes did not materialize.

Your argument is a complete nonsequiter.

The blame for this allegedly Republican Governor handing control of the Executive branch to a flaming Leftist rests solely on his shoulders.

very similar to the argument freepers who vow they would not vote for McCain or Rudy for president - and then say the "blame" for Hillary walking into the white house would rest with "someone else", not them.

Had Arnold won these ballot measures, he would have alot more political capital and it would have been conservative voters who provided that capital. had that happened, you wouldn't have seen this kind of stuff or the possible Tookie clemency. It didn't happen, so the guy is floundering politically right now.

If the Republicans nominate either of those two clowns and lose in '08, then they will have themselves to blame.

Bull puckey! Your constant posting (and others) of this nonsense on FR will never make it true. I see you didn't respond to my prior post to you (#41), demonstrating that the numbers and facts do NOT support you imaginary excuses.

Arnold has supported a leftist agenda from even before day one. Today, it appears he wants to blame conservatives for his further moves to the left. Arnold is as Arnold does--and it doesn't have anything to do with the Special Election. What excuses did he offer before?

Should I go on?

The quality of the RINO shills around here is really slipping.

Your arguments are laughable.

"Should I go on?"

Why not? With what he's doing now, it just reinforces what we ALL knew, but the swooners wouldn't admit, even before the Recall election was over!!!

It's all about Arnold being loved by everybody, just like it was with Jesse Ventura!!!

Arnold has to govern. He has to work with the legislature. Who better to assist him than one of Davis' cronies? So long as she's doing her job and not engaged in another agenda, she may be very useful.

Wilson's people have utterly failed. The reform agenda failed. The political strategies failed. Getting some turnover in the legislature failed. Conservatives abandoned Arnold, stabbing him in the back and were never with him anyway because too many are obsessed with litmus tests rather than making progress.

He's in there now. We're either supporting him with all our best efforts and energy or we're electing Phil Angelides next November. It's that simple. Get it through your heads.

He's not done anything to deserve the treatment he's gotten. The economy is moving forward, he's twice vetoed driver's licenses for illegals, voice support for the Minutemen, repealed the car tax, held back the rabid growth demands of the education establishment, protected 3-strikes, vetoed homosexual marriage, has not raised taxes, serviced the debt a year early, attempted to bring competition to districts, allow him to make mid-year corrections on the budget, demand better quality teachers, not commuted death penalty cases, supported parental notification on abortion and paycheck protection.

The truth is he's done a lot of good. But this isn't a dictatorship. So long as the psychotic socialists and reconquistas dominating the legislature continue to be reelected and the unions continue to wield hundreds of millions of stolen money for slanderous advertising, Arnold *must* work with the legislature. He tried going directly to the people. The people failed him.

He's done far more for us than Grey Davis or any Democrat who will beat the crap out of any "litmus test" Republican generated by a GOP primary will.

If he commutes quadruple murderer "Tookie's" death sentence then Arnold will be done for and have gone too far to try to win back political capital.

Like with the national Republicans, including W, defeat will have been pulled from the jaws of victory.

If Arnold's the gubernatorial nominee in 2006, I'll still vote for him over any Democrat.

I figured you pro-GLBTers would show up soon to try to justify appointment of one of your own.

Read upthread. Your statements are the same tiresome, unsupported dribble that has been proven wrong on thread after thread. Time for a new screenname--yours has no credibility left.

Bottom like was, California had a chance this last 2005 special election withat least 3 out of the 4 initiatives and we the people blew it.

The failure was us, not Arnold regarding the last election.
