Denis Leary's Sick Idea of Humor (Bashes Christian Belief)

DENIS LEARY’S SICK IDEA OF HUMOR

Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, “Merry F#%$in’ Christmas” (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.

There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by “Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir” about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:

“Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgin—even after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.

“Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.

“Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.

“Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.”

Ex Catholics are always the worst blasphemers.

Pray for him, pray that he repents and returns to the Church before he faces judgement.

I fail to see why virgin birth implies divinity.

It doesn't imply divinity. My point was more that if one is willing to lower their standards of rationality enough to believe that there was an actual virgin birth, any additional story surrounding the virgin birth e.g. that Jesus is the son of God should be equally plausible regardless of the claim. If you are going to bother believing in the former, the latter isn't much of a stretch.

I like a lot of Leary's humor, but his anti-Catholic stuff gets on my nerves at times. I won't be listening to this one.

I won't be sending any comments, but I'll use the clicker here.

Leary is better when he rags on dead rock stars:

"What kind of country is this when John Lennon takes six bullets in the chest, and Yoko is standing right next to him and not one f'ing bullet."

Or

"Let me tell you something. We need a two and a half hour movie about the Doors? Folks, no we don't. I can sum it up for you in five seconds, ok. I'm drunk. I'm nobody. I'm drunk. I'm famous. I'm drunk. I'm f'ing dead. There's the whole movie, ok!? Big fat dead guy in a bath tub, there's your title for you."

Most Christians and for that matter Moslems believe Jesus was born of a virgin.

It's not just a Catholic thing.

In today's world, where in vitro fertilization is now common, I'm amazed that so many still find the truth of the virgin birth so hard to believe. Is it really that much of a stretch, knowing what we now know?

Actually, assuming they had turkey basters or the equivalent in ancient times, it shouldn't be that much of a stretch for anybody.

Although I guess it depends on your definition of "virgin."

The show about the firemen is Rescue Me and it's going to be back in the spring with Season 3. I find it to be one of the best shows on TV.

He obviously does not like them.

I'm not big on folks making fun of Jesus or Mary...and I'm a prod.

just my 2 cents

*WC, James came after Jesus.

THIS is certainly what the founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment /sarcasm

Agreed.

This must be what John Adams feared when he wrote:

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other." - Oct 11, 1798 Address
I saw the title of the Leary show and couldn't believe what I was reading. If this is what passes for entertainment nowadays I say no thank you.
To think that many in this forum would defend this putrid garbage in the name of free speech is disgusting.

So, if Denis Leary had simply said, "I don't believe that Mary was a virgin." Would that have been ok?

Is the problem the fact that he used vulgar language in a discussion of Mary or is it that he disagrees with you?

Kinison would have me LMAO. Leary isn't even in the ballpark.

Kinison:

Joseph: "Yea, you better be the Son of God, little mister. And you better be the ONLY Son of God, if you get my drift!"

***

Joseph's co-worker, at lunch: "So, Joseph, how's the Son of God? (snicker)

Joseph: "Shut up!"

Whatever you do, don't read, "The Third Secret" by Steve Berry. I finished it this morning. The novel revolves around the third secret revealed at Fatima. The author writes (as his fictional account of the secret) that Mary tells the world that married priests are fine, women clergy are fine, homosexuality is A-OK and abortion is a woman's choice (after all Mary was not forced into pregnancy, but gave her consent).

As you say, most Protestants don't believe Mary was ever-virgin.

Don't know where you got that info but you are dead wrong.

"Most Protestants claim that Mary bore children other than Jesus. To support their claim, these Protestants refer to the biblical passages which mention the 'brethren of the Lord.'"
