Denis Leary's Sick Idea of Humor (Bashes Christian Belief)

DENIS LEARY’S SICK IDEA OF HUMOR

Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, “Merry F#%$in’ Christmas” (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.

There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by “Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir” about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:

“Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgin—even after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.

“Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.

“Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.

“Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.”

I agree we shouldn't censor, but what I would like to do is to buy my channels a la carte so that I can choose not to BUY comedy central, not just to avoid watching it. It's all about the money.

LOL, I love the "turn the channel folks", because I wonder why they don't just "skip this thread", if activism disturbs them so!

Keep up the good work!

No problem. I knew the Orthodox would take issue with this too, since they believe the same as Catholics in regards to those issues.

I USE my channel selector

You and others seem to be conflating two things: maintaining a respect for free speech no matter how odius and the natural inclination to respond to odius speech. Responding angrily or being offended doesn't necessarily imply a hidden agenda or unspoken desire to preclude or censor these kinds of tirades. One might almost think that passivity or silence in the face of inflammatory speech is the only way to guard or respect the first amendment. Leary's a big boy; if he wants to start an argument then he should be able to take the heat. Arguments are good in a free country! Passivity is dangerous.

I'm so tired of this flawed argument.

I'm pouring raw sewage through your neighborhood. Don't like it? Shut your door and close your windows.

I would assume he is refering to John 15 (Christ speaking).

"If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you."

When you stop having similar reactions to things that offend you, then you can say "get over it."

I have yet to get offended by a TV show since I know how to change the channel.

So if I see a murder, rape, or some other crime committed does that mean I accept it?

Leary was great and funny in "The Ref", but this is offensive.

Re: buying channels separately - absolutely! I could drop my 98 digital channels and nothing on down to TLC and FoxNews and call it a day.

In some instances this form of passive protest is fine, however, there are times when enough is enough and action greater than passively not watching is called for. I am not a Catholic, but this is highly offensive and completely outside the bounds. It is unecessary and only done to provoke outrage among middle America. Gee, how about a skit and a monologue about allah? How about a funny skit about the origins of Kwanzaa?

Watch another Comedy central Show - South Park. Consistently savages Muslims and Jews as well as most other religions. Funny as hell though.

I won't be watching this crap. Why don't they trash the muslims on a comedy show? I forgot, it's okay to attack Chrisitanity in this country but you cannot do that to any other religion.

My guess would be that Christians don't saw your head off when you insult their religion, while muslims have a nasty habit of doing just that.
