Fatal Robbery Attempt

Two shot; one killed

Omaha police are investigating an apparent botched robbery at Benson Jewelry and Loan that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old man and critical injuries for a 17-year-old man.

The shootings happened at 61st and Maple shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Kendall Tealer, 18, of Omaha was pronounced dead at the scene while Brandon Bowie, 17, also of Omaha was transported by rescue squad in very critical condition to University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Business owners in the area that Channel 6 News spoke with say they did not recognize either of the two people who were shot but they say that they did recognize people from the store who left with police.

Investigators said Tuesday evening that they were not looking for suspects in the shootings.

Witnesses at the scene believe employees shot the men in self-defense during a botched robbery attempt.

"At this point in the investigation, there are no suspects we're looking for," said Omaha police officer Andrew Passo.

Passo said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to contact the homicide unit at 444-5656.

No need for a weak liberal court system to give this robber a slap on the wrist and probation, justice took care of this case allready.

We should know later today if the County Prosecutor will file Manslaughter charges against the shop owner. The only reason this is being (wrongly) considered is because the 2nd perp was running out of the shop (still armed) when he was shot twice more.

Hopefully the County Prosecutor will do the right thing and refuse to file charges - but this is anti-gun Omaha, and you never know what might happen.

Hopefully the County Prosecutor will do the right thing and give this shop owner an award, a book of gift certificates, a Reno 911 DVD season 1 set, and enter him in the "Grand Justice Sweepstakes" for a chance to win.

Since the right to carry is pretty much prohibited in NE, I am very interested in learning more about how the store owner is able to walk around with a gun strapped on--and what consequences he will face for his actions.

This is a lovely story with a happy ending, though--LOL!

CONCEALED carry is verboten in Nebraska. It is perfectly legal to carry a weapon openly! Yep, you heard it correctly. I've never been able to make any sense of it, but that's the way the law reads.

In addition, most of those laws only cover PUBLIC carry. This was in a private business on private property where a lot of high-demand merchandise is being exchanged under somewhat dubious conditions.

Well written here, the two men were shot because of the robbery they were attempting, not two youths or teens shot by some gun toting rightwing nutcase with delusions of a right to self defense.

I predict that the person who wrote this has a great future in any field except jounalism.

For the kid who survived, that ought to teach him a lesson.

When I drove out through the Rocky Mountain states last summer I drove way out of my way to avoid NE because of it's anti-self defense stance.

I emailed the AG offices of the states on my proposed route that do not honor my Georgia CCL to see how I could legally carry and/or transport my gun in each state. NE and AR were the 2 states on that long route that did not offer a workable solution for keeping a gun in a ready condition in my car and getting it in and out of a hotel room. IA does not honor my CCL, but it does allow loaded guns in a car and carrying it from the car to a hotel room.

Neither NE or AR will get a dime of my vacation money until they abolish their unConstitutional anti-self defense laws.

Yep, back when dial-up was king, almost before the petrified one invented the Internet.

I'm only a few months behind you in FR seniority and I'm still stuck with dial-up. I'm too far out in the sticks to get a DSL, and a satellite connection is too expensive for my retirement budget. I can usually get connected at 56K now, which is a little better than the 24K I was getting when I first went online in '95. Soon I will probably be the last man alive on planet earth still using dialup.

How long before the dead perp's family starts whining/crying about how he was such a good boy, and he was just starting to turn his life around?

"At this point in the investigation, there are no suspects we're looking for," said Omaha police officer Andrew Passo.

Cases like this are great. The whereabouts of the only suspect left is known. No searching, only friendly witnesses left to interview, reports are a breeze. Everyone is happy.

Only bad part is, it seems some young people never learn and are so quick to destroy their lives and sometimes the lives of others. Dead 18 year olds laying dead in the street, all over a couple dollars is pretty sad.

We're working on it. But there is a single obstructionist senator (Nebraska has a unicameral legislature) who stifles the concealed carry bill every time it is introduced. Fortunately, he is term-limited, so we can wait him out if we have to.

Hey--I love that! What you're saying is that Nebraskans can have free, unfettered access to the 2A without jumping through anybody's hoops.

We should all be so lucky!

Not exactly. Open carry is legal, but cops are free to harrass you for causing a public nuisance if the gun frightens or intimidates someone. And anyplace that wants to can bar you from the premises if you're strapped; in some places (schools, hospitals, etc.) you CAN'T carry, even openly.

It's a truly bass-ackward situation, which a concealed carry law would clear up. But that will take time, Grasshopper.

Announced this morning that Douglas County Prosecutor, Stu Dornan, will NOT file charges against the store owner.
