All national police forces eventually get out of control. In Russia the Tzar's police morphed into the KGB. Hitler's State Security became the Gestapo. East Germany's Statsi police, like all "security" forces, soon achieved a life of its own. This usually takes place when the organization gains the right of making secret life or death decisions.

It is because of the history of "Interior Security Organizations" that many Americans are concerned about our own Homeland Security police force and the Patriot act passed to give it the power to combat terrorism. It's an easy step from protecting the people to monitoring the people.

It has happened everywhere; in Africa, China, Cuba, Central America. The secret police tail begins at some point to wag the government dog.

We see that in the CIA. Signs are that the CIA has acquired too much power and is too often unaccountable even to the President. If the CIA were closed down it would not be missed. It has hardly been a model of intelligence accuracy in recent decades.

With the CIA gone the government would still have dozens of major intelligence agencies and thousands of other intelligence units doing the job.

I believe that serious consideration should be given to the possible de-fanging and retirement of the CIA.

Is there anyone other than me that thinks Joe Wilson's 2002 trip to Niger was the dumbest attempt at intelligence gathering? Joe Wilson was not unknown to other governments, he was a former diplomat and NSC staffer. He sets himself up in a hotel and starts talking to Nigerian officials. My guess is that most of the embassies in town figured out what he was up to - and particularly the French embassy.

I have no idea what he's done, but I imagine that house-cleaning would be difficult. Think about this: You have an employee with no loyalty to the US who has been leaking to hurt our interests. You fire him. Now what do you think that employee will do? Keep his mouth shut or spread more damaging information? Plus I'm sure these guys have no problem telling lies to advance their agenda and damage their enemies.

Another problem is this: If you want to prosecute, you need ironclad evidence. Just knowing that someone is a dirtbag is not enough. So you have to keep an eye on them and gather proof of their crimes.

Laugh all you want - but you should call the offices of your elected, demand an investigation of these allegations. To do nothing is so easy; DO something about it.

But you have just defined an impossible situation. It still leaves the question of what has Goss actually done. I am for house cleaning, but I haven't seen anything of any note to this point. Did I miss it?

What's in it for the CIA? Bush has increased their funding and called for more human intelligence. Clinton did the exact opposite. So, I wonder, why, other than to CYA on the failures that led to 9/11, would the CIA set this up?

"So, I wonder, why, other than to CYA on the failures that led to 9/11, would the CIA set this up?"

Many careerists in State and the CIA and even Defense are strongly opposed to Bush's policy in Iraq. They favored a policy which protected the status quo in the Middle East, i.e., a never-ending state of despotism and quasi-peace (no American casualties, and to hell with everyone else), and endless "peace processes" that accomplish nothing but create an illusion of seriousness, an illusion that something meaningful is really being done. Then Bush came along and decided to take the risk of making a decisive - and costly - move for permanent, meaningful change, and they got cold feet, wanted nothing to do with it.

Hmm. Interesting. In my little head, I would think that the Intelligence Community would be the foremost, patriotic and foreward looking group in the country.

Crap on me, I guess.

If all this is true, why can't Bush just fire these lefties for letting their personal views conflict with their jobs?

Do Congressional conservatives have the courage to take on the CIA?

Peter King gives indications of having courage

Peter King calling Joe Wilson a fraud and a liar on Scarborough NOW October 26, 2005

Saying folks at the CIA are trying to undermine the President.

The best work against these rebels is done in the dark, I think.

Everyone should ask the Republicans on Senate Intelligence Committee to immediately launch a classified investigation. I wrote them all about two months ago, if they do it properly we won't hear about it.
