WASHINGTON - If its a spruce tree adorned with 10,000 lights and 5,000 ornaments displayed on the Capitol grounds in December, its a Christmas tree and thats what it should be called, says House Speaker Dennis Hastert .
"I strongly urge that we return to this tradition and join the White House, countless other public institutions and millions of American families in celebrating the holiday season with a Christmas tree," Hastert wrote to Architect Alan Hantman.
On Dec. 8 Hastert will flip the switch to light the tree, a 65-foot Engelmann Spruce from the Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico. On Tuesday workmen were erecting the tree on the West Front of the Capitol.
The article does not say, but what was the problem here? Did a bunch of PC wackos want to call them "Solstice Holiday Sparkle Trees" or something?
Darn those pagans and their decorated yule trees and pigs sacrificed to Freya and made into a ham, and holly and mistletoe and hanging boughs and all that.
All we need is for the majority to quit standing around with their mouths shut and speak out. We control the money, that speaks louder than anything.
"On Dec. 8 Hastert will flip the switch to light the tree....." So why doesn't Hastert call it a Christmas tree when he lights it? Would he be hauled to jail? Spanked by the New York Slimes?
All Denny has to do is introduce the tree as the "Capitol Christmas Tree". And the PC crowd can just stew in their fetid juices.
If our country has come to debate the naming of a christmas tree and congress has to fight to name as such then this country is F##Ked beyond repair
Festivus Spruce
Is there any link to information on this..??..
Holiday-- came from the word haligdæg, from halig "holy" + dæg "day;" in 14c. meaning both "religious festival" and "day of recreation,".
I wonder if the PC crowd knows they are effectively calling it a holy day tree?
Don`t tell them that or they`ll be screaming to call it a "lighted tree".
Hurrah for Hastert! This is great news! I was kind of hoping the President's Christmas card would say Merry Christmas inside, but it's Happy Holidays once again.
Bad news in that they're not about the business of cutting government and decreasing the government bureaucracy that hangs over all our heads. Of course we are talking about Republicans and everyone should know by now the past four years Republicans haven't seen a spending bill they could turn down...
His office said the tree began to be referred to as the Holiday Tree in the 1990s. Spokesman Ron Bonjean said the reasons were unclear.
Perhaps Ron is trying to be diplomatic....since he's not a political apointee.
I hear they are going to eliminate the "Great Feats of Strength" this Festivus due to poll numbers showing that this offends physically challenged people.
They must of put that idea forth from last years Festivus during the "airing of grievances"...As for me, my family will still stick with tradition and perform the feats of strength. Last year was incredible as we had Grandma carry 150 lbs cinder blocks up 3 flights of stairs. She aired her displeasure with this at the airing of grievances, but we finally got her to do it by celebrating the lesser known Festivus tradition of mockery.
