TALL AFAR, Iraq, Nov. 29, 2005 — U.S. Army paratroopers from Company C, 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division conducted a raid on the outskirts of the city here Nov. 18, searching for a man connected to insurgent activities.

The night of the raid was calm and quiet until the rumble of Humvees and tracked vehicles broke the silence.

The noise grew louder as men dismounted the vehicles and began to kick in the doors of houses on the desolate stretch of land.

The soldiers searched the houses looking for one man, a man connected with insurgent activities here.

Once the paratroopers entered the houses, they questioned residents and conducted searches of the houses and surrounding land.

Despite questioning the occupants and searching the houses, the raid was unsuccessful.

The insurgent they were looking for was gone, his own father denying his existence.

After searching several surrounding homes, the soldiers returned to their vehicles.

The man's capture will have to wait for another day.

Two nights before, the paratroopers had a marked success, finding a cache containing 105 artillery rounds.

Working off of a tip from a local resident, the soldiers converged on a house at the edge of the city, said U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Nathan Kish, the company fire support officer.

After arriving at the house which was under surveillance by Army helicopters, the company's engineers set to work searching for a weapons cache, Kish said.

The metal detectors the engineers were using soon began to hum as the men began to find artillery rounds lightly concealed by dirt, Kish said.

All of the rounds still containing explosives were taken into a field and destroyed; empty casings were taken to another location for disposal, Kish said.

The owner of the property, who apparently was warehousing the improvised explosive device components, was also detained in the operation, Kish said.

Thanks for the post. Yea Airborne. They will carry on where The Stryker brigades left off and finish the job. In a way it is a wonder that the Baathist even attempt to carry on their dastardly deeds in Tall Afar after the hammering they got a few months back. Looks like a lot more in place Iraqi forces have to continue in these type cities. Goons still lurking around like snakes.
