Hero NYC Cop Killed By Our Mania Over Guns
NY Post ^ | November 29, 2005 | Dr. Robert Kurtz

Posted on 11/29/2005 9:28:50 AM PST by dead

Dr. Robert Kurtz, co-director of trauma and critical care at Kings County Hospital, fought to save the life of hero cop Dillon Stewart.

Dr. Kurtz said the time has come to get the guns off the city's streets...

THE country and the city are awash in guns and we have to do something about it.

New York, as we all know, has very restrictive gun laws and a very active police force that works very hard to get guns off the streets.

But when the whole country is deluged with guns, and when people can buy guns very easily in Florida, Georgia, and Virginia and bring them up here, they're much too easily available.

Consider what would have happened yesterday with stricter federal gun controls in effect. If this man were angry at Officer Dillon Stewart, he might have punched him instead of shooting him.

But when he could turn to a gun to settle a dispute, the results were tragic. What an utter waste of a decent young man. What a waste of so many lives.

Why have we allowed our city streets to become war zones — war zones that have made us so experienced at treating gunshot wounds at KCH that we were chosen to train Army nurses and doctors in battlefield medicine?

There have been a slew of bills out there in Congress to curb the gun lobby. But the armaments industry controls the National Rifle Association, and the NRA has intimidated politicians, both Republican and Democratic, making it impossible to pass suitably restrictive gun laws…

We've lectured against violence and we've let people know how important gun control is… Hopefully, the death of Officer Stewart will reignite the people's passion to bring the gun lobby to heel.

We can't even surveil suspected terrorists but he wants every single person and home searched for guns?

Or maybe he thinks all the guns will be turned in for a coupon to buy new sneakers.

(Let me get this straight: the shooting occurred in the city and state with some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country and "Dr Demento" here thinks the problem is not enough gun control? )

This thinking is consistent with the Liberals' MO. Every time their policies don't work, they want more of the same. When welfare doesn't work, it's because we're not spending enough money on it. If public schools don't work it's because we're not spending enough money on it. If taxes rise and they choke the economy, they want to raise taxes more to make up for loss of tax revenues. If a toll increase makes people take other routes, they raise the tolls to make up for the short fall. If gun control doesn't work, they want to increase it. When an increase in the minimum wage predictably raises unemployment, they want to increase the minimum wage further...

The man is a retard with the initials MD after his name, but his retarded opinion is one the the NYC media agrees with so he gets a forum to display his ignorance for all to see..

Minor nit.

The President isn't involved in a constitutional amendment. Just Conggress and the states.

...and, one of the highest murder rates in the country is Washington, DC, with the strictest gun laws in the country. Hey doc--Disarm the criminals and leave us citizens alone! Doesn't that make more sense?

Your figure of 100 million guns is way off I believe. The number is more in the order of 300-500 million, and that is only the legal ones. No one really knows because there were no records kept until the last part of the 20th century.

Sure--they bring them up here to commit crimes because citizens are better armed in Florida, Georgia, and Virginia.

Reminds me of the question, "What do you call the guy/girl who graduates in last place in medical school?" answer: Doctor

Did they explain what heroic deed was attributed to this cop?

The scumbag sped through a red light, and this officer pursued him. As he pulled along side of him, the scumbag shot at him five times. One of the bullets went in through his armpit and penetrated the officer's heart. Despite the wound, the officer followed the scumbag's car, for another block and a half, to a garage where he abandoned it and took off on foot.

The officer radioed in the location of the car before collapsing from his wounds. The car led to the suspect, who was found in his girlfriend's apartment a few minutes after the officer died.

This is, of course, a deliberate lie on the good doctor's part. I'm sure he is fully aware that one has to have a driver's licence for the actual state in which the sale takes place to purchase a handgun. A new yorker just can't come to GA or Fl and buy a gun from a licensed dealer.

Mayor Blooming-idiot lamented about the TWO lives lost when a killer entered City Hall with a gun and shot dead a council member. Then an armed guard shot the killer dead.

Blooming-idiot equated the two deaths.

He couldn't see why anyone needed to be carrying a gun.

I kid you not.

Guns are not the problem. Get the criminal gangs off the streets. They are the principal misusers of weapons of various types to further their criminal behavior. Guns are the best defense for the average person to even the odds against criminals walking the streets.

Idaho has a great CCW law. Lots of people carry and firearm oriented assaults are extremely rare.
