The question folks is this -- should our courts be in the business of deciding what religious schools/hospitals/institutions deem to be right/ethical conduct to be worthy of employment ?

I wonder if one of her students is responsible for the pregnancy...

Good point.

And the argument the teacher makes is ridiculous.

The school is supposed to be grateful that she didn't have an abortion?

That's like a male teacher being fired for being in a barfight and arguing: "Hey, I had a knife on me and I could've stabbed that guy in the neck and killed him. But instead I just busted his jaw. Shouldn't I get some consideration for the horrible, senseless crime I chose not to commit?"

She was not fired for being pregnant. Nor is she being discriminated against. She was fired for committing adultury or the act of sex outside of the sacriment of Holy Matrimony. There are cases of male and female teachers being fired when it is discovered by the parish they work for that they are single and living with a "significant other" (having sexual relations).

The church should stick to its principles and values. Too many times, organizations belly up when pressure is applied and give up on their values, morals and principles. Now, I am not saying I agree with everything that my church advocates and/or dissavows. But on the principle issue of preparing souls for heaven, they should stick to their guns. If this is the rule, then so be it. Let's show some leadership. Either enforce the rule or change it. Don't waiver.

Well if she were a Catholic Priest she could have been communing with the altar boys and if discovered merely transfered...

They ought to give her at least 1/2 credit for being heterosexual...and with a suitable partner age wise (if applicable)...

imo

The funny thing is that I bet she will win.

The State really can't have people who refuse to follow their edicts. It really angers them.

A person's sex life shouldn't be held up for public scrutiny...

A pregnant women in front of a bunch of school children is pretty darn public.

The irony is that if she had quietly had an abortion she would still be teaching at the school. I think the school should have had compassion on someone who obviously made a mistake and particularly since she is opting to have the baby. Jesus did not condemn the woman caught in adultery, but asked her to repent.

If we were to discriminate on the basis of unwed pregnancy, we might just have a teacher shortage.

A shortage of that kind of teacher is good to have.

A person's sex life shouldn't be held up for public scrutiny and, as the discrimination suit points out, such policies unfairly target women.

When a single woman, who is a teacher, is pregnant, her belly advertises her sex life to the public. And I guess biology unfairly targets women because only women get pregnant? PuLeeze! THis is a private school and if the teachers know they are held to a moral turpitude standard, they better keep their legs crossed if they want to keep their jobs.

Christian institutions need to make explicit hiring and employment practices on immoral behavior, co-habitation, pre-marital sex or pregnancy, sodomy, etc. Emplyees engaging in these are considered to have submitted their resignations to their employer and are expected to discuss their end-of-service date with their employer.
