Specter: NFL may have violated anti-trust laws on T.O.
By Amy Worden INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Sen. Arlen Specter today accused the NFL of potentially violating anti-trust laws in its treatment of Terrell Owens and said he is investigating the matter.
Speaking at a news conference in Harrisburg, Specter said the NFL and the Eagles have effectively "blacklisted" Owens from football by forbidding him to play and prohibiting other teams from talking to him.
"It's a restraint of trade for them to do that and the thought crosses my mind it might be a violation of anti-trust laws," Specter said. "The NFL can have whatever rules it wants on authorizing suspension or keeping you on the team for the balance of the year, but they can't violate the law."
Specter said he began looking into the possibilty of anti-trust violations this morning after reading an account of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' alleged "tampering" with Owens.
"The NFL has a limited anti-trust exemption for revenue-sharing but they are subject to the anti-trust laws like everyone else," Specter said.
The Eagles have filed a complaint with the NFL accusing Jones of tampering because of comments the Dallas Cowboys owner made on a radio show regarding a question about Owens.
When asked whether he would consider signing the Eagles' suspended receiver, Jones initially said he was "deliberately avoiding saying whether or not the Cowboys would be interested."

My thoughts too.
I think the MLB and the NFL should have hearings into the failings of Congress.
When Arlen was a wee broth of a lad, on a family visit to Scotland, he tried to catch a caber. Sadly, it struck him on the head, and he has been addle-brained ever since..
This is a perfect example to tell the RNC to stick it when they call looking for more donations.
LOL
there are a lot of things that have never dawned on Specter....
Even he isn't asserting this retarded line of thought.
What I thought. Thanks.
...and Specter would know about broken trust
"Specter has time to represent T.O but not enough time to hear the Alito hearing. What a bunch of B.S."
No crap!!!!
Amen. We're in a war, have a border problem, and a large defecit. The senate has a lot more important things to talk about than a malcontent wideout.
No, it's an example of what you should say if Specter's campaign committee calls you.
Specter doesn't speak for any Republican other than himself.
The way T.O. performed the active part of this year, I believe the Eagles were paying him for NOT PLAYING as well. The only difference now is that someone else gets a chance to perform and display their talent for Eagle fans.
The Peter Principle lives on.
That's gotta hurt. Not.
Oh gee .. does this more Senate hearings??
rolling my eyes
If Specter did his homework before he shot his mouth off, he'd know that once the arbitrator's decision is handed down, it is even enforceable in federal court, under existing federal law. And at this point, Specter sticks his nose in and claims that this is illegal?
How many times does this doofus lawyer/Senator have to show that he is a legal klutz before he gets dumped as Chairman of Judiciary so his potential to cause harm to the nation will be greatly decreased.
Congressman Billybob
Gee, Arlen, sorry to interrupt your busy schedule.
I wonder if he had to consult Scottish law on this?
