Did you hear the stats he read off about the improvements he HAS made during his 5 years???!!! What's he going to do to build on the improvements during the next three years?
His heart just wasn't in this speech.

"Promised Interior Enforcement. Wants to enforce immigration laws throughout the land. Better worksite enforcement.
Until he directs the Justice Department to use the RICO states to confiscate the businesses that employ criminal aliens and taking the assets of the owners (such as their home), I say it's all hot air. Sorry, W has been great for the War on Terror but criminally negligent on illegal immigration.

I got the same sense you did---the audience heard very little to cheer. Tepid applause when the President mentioned Sen. McCain. Much louder applause and even cheers when he then mentioned Sen. Kyl. Whick one has partnered with Sen. Ted Kennedy on another amnesty scheme? Which one says he wants enforcement first and for "temporary" workers to return home before being permitted into any temporary worker program? Just guess.

Right. But there's no way to control what's coming or what's here in the near term.
So let's eliminate the benefits. Guess what? At least a third of illegals wind up on welfare. Money stops.

coming here legally is one thing, coming here illegally is another. NOTHING should be done to REWARD Illegals. Allowing them to stay is exactly that a REWARD.
I don't guess you would produce something from a 2000 campaign that says anything about rewarding illegals could you?

If I were president, on 9-11-01, I would have shut our Northern and Southern borders down so tight, a cockroach couldn't sneak through.
If we get hit hard again.......

Agree. The response did appear luke warm. What do you expect though - The speech is many years overdue and still lacking in any real plan for a remedy.
That pesky 'Guest Worker' plan? Lack of adequate funding for a real fence? etc., etc. Nothing really new here IMO.

"I'm still waiting to hear an apology for calling the Minutemen vigilantes." Yes. That would be right and good evidence that the man if finally getting it. He thanked those specifically in uniform for enforcing the border. Hmmm....

When Bush got to the part about enforcing the laws inside the US, he started talking about businesses that employ the illegals and I stood up ready to cheer and then he says "we're gonna help them" rather than "we're gonna shut them down and throw the illegal employers in jail"...that was when I changed the channel.

Reagan also said amnesty was his biggest mistake and one that most of us have learned from. Bush keeps saying he's not in favor of amnesty but anyone who knows what 1 and 1 equals also knows "temporary" workers never go home, never have and never will except once when Eisenhower made them. Good luck if you ever see that happen again.
To: jackv
"It allows the people to remain for a limited time only!!! Hardly amnesty!"Do you really think most Americans are stupid enough to believe that illegal aliens who are given a 6 year guest worker amnesty are going to suddenly up and go home after 6 years?
Do you really?
Old German saying: "There is NOTHING as permanent as a 'temporary' guest worker!"

it is the pay they refuse to work Can you give an example of that please? Like what kind of work at what kind of pay will an American not do? Are you talking entry level, semi-skilled, skilled, or just plain dirty work?

We're not interested in pretty words.
The only thing that will do is:
A) Close the border.
and...
B) Enforce existing U.S. Immigration laws.
It really isn't complicated.
This is nothing but rhetoric. We want action.
To: Political Junkie Too
Don't laugh. The enviro's are trying everything they can to stop a border barrier fence because it will harm endangered species.

Not at all friend. But I will offer you this.......lets see W put aplication to action on our own border as he has towards terrorists in other nations.
To be fair I will say that W cannot do it alone. He needs another body to STEP UP.
That would be C O N G R E S S.
Why is it that Tancredo isn't invited to the white house again?
To: jackv
Some people on this forum wouldn't be satisfied if we burned illegals at the stake. Lets clone velociraptors like in Jurassic Park to patrol our borders and eat intruders [sarcasm]

Maybe not dragging.. but NOT giving automatic citizenship to anchor babies or their parents would be a big START..It would surely help; can that be done without an amendment? Or could one grant citizenship to the "anchor" baby but deport the parents? Imagine how the MSM would play that.

many here think if you criticize the Pres they are traitors or trolls etc
No, the President gets his share of criticism. But I just think that it is funny that a LIVE THREAD has MORE criticism than the words of his speech. LIVE THREADS are supposed to be places where people who cannot listen to or see the speech can venture over to read it.
