Brain's 'true love' lasts only a year

PAVIA, Italy, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Italian scientists have determined the brain chemical fired up when a person meets a "true love" doesn't last a lifetime, but rather, just 12 months.

When a person falls in love, levels of a protein called Nerve Growth Factor skyrocket, researchers from the University of Pavia found.

"We have demonstrated for the first time that circulating levels of NGF are elevated among subjects in love, suggesting an important role for this molecule in the social chemistry of human beings," said Dr. Enzo Emanuele, who led the study.

But, after studying a volunteer group of people between the ages of 18 and 31, researchers found the levels of NGF had fallen to original levels after one year, the Daily Mail reported.

Not to discourage romantics, the team wrote that they believe the same chemical also stimulates companionship, which is essential in any long-term relationship.

The report appears in the current Psychoneuroendocrinology journal.

Thank goodness! I was so lovesick when I met KACHusband that I was sort of crazy. Never expected to be that madly in love with anybody.

But true love is committment, work, shared experience and choice about what is really important.

Who knows - it might. But first they'll need to conduct a lot of studies with proper trials, and will be signing up volunteers for that.

I think that mechanism must be broke in my brain because I can and have remained totally whacked out on women for years- plural. I don't like it to tell the truth.

I fall in and out of love a lot quicker than that maybe several times a day. Though the separation and denial hangover can last for decades. I guess I should be glad nobody ever took me up on several marriage proposals I advanced. Better ornery by myself then in bad company.

"We have demonstrated for the first time that circulating levels of NGF are elevated among subjects in love,..."

Soooo, I guess Soul Mates are two people who have abnormally high functioning NGF glands?

Another "study" to support the culture of permissiveness.

One year? One year? Yea, maybe for a guy.

But there's no difference between males and females? Bull.

Geez. The actual half-life of a female's emotions is about 45 minutes!
