"The reason why I didn't stand for 'God Bless America' was because I didn't like the way they tied 'God Bless America' and 9-11 to the war in Iraq, in baseball," he said when he joined the Marlins in January. When he started not standing for this, he claimed it was to protest the bomb testings in Vieques in Puerto Rico. At any rate, he's smart to start standing for the song again. Every time he showed up at Yankee Stadium since he started his protest, he was booed heartily.
