Missile Attack On Passenger Jet?

I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket."

I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.

Thanks for calling the station. This is very strange. Maybe they can't prove it was a rocket because it landed in the ocean. Maybe they called it a bad story because it can't be proved.

Maybe the story was spiked because they don't need the sheeple stirred up during one of the busiest air travel periods of the year. Would YOU change your 'holiday' travel plans if you heard on the news that a commercial airliner just had a close encounter with a missle of some kind? Would you?

Well, I heard the report on am 1040 here in Tampa Bay - ABC news. It was around 7:00 EST this morning and it was a male reporter.

I don't believe it is a "bad story", just another cover up. The news report I heard stated the pilot said that a "rocket" was fired at the plane; however, officials said it was nothing. I think I would tend to trust the pilot.

She told me that her brother, although never coming out and saying it, strongly hinted that it was a missile. That removed the last vestige of doubt that I ever had.

When I heard that, among the 170+ witnesses that described a missile rising from the ground to strike the airliner -- and that two of them were airborn Air National Guardsmen -- and that one of those was specifically trained to recognize missile types and makes by exhaust, plume, and explosion signatures -- my last vestige of doubt was removed.

It was also the first time I recognized that the government will lie to us, outright, with their teeth in their mouth and their faces hanging out.

I am positive of what I heard on the 6:00 AM broadcast - I was driving & wide awake.

I heard it on ABC radio news at 7:00am est, and I was awake and driving. It said the pilot reported it to the tower while he could still see the rocket trail ahead of him. They reported the FBI saying it was probably a flare or bottle rocket. I, too said "At 6,000 feet???"! The description implied that the pilot saw the 'rocket' early enough to be able to make the radio call while it was still in site, so I was thinking he saw it coming up at him too...

I never caught what passenger jet it was - whether American, etc.

I thought they said American Airlines, Los Angeles to Chicago flight. I too, have tried searching for information on that news story, and came up empty till your posting.

I just talked with the news director of the station in question and he said they did not broadcast this story. "It's news to me," he said.

I heard it on the radio at the top of the hour 10:00 am. It was ABC news. It was reported just like you said. They reported the FBI saying it was probably a flare or bottle rocket. Sounds like a crock, you would think that if they were not sure they would report it that way. Another reason not to believe the MSM.

I just got off the phone with the guy at WTAW, 1620 AM.

He heard the same news report, at 6:00 AM. He had a hard time believing the bottle rocket theory, too.
He checked his AP reports - nothing.

He stated, "maybe a bad story - that's why no further news."

what is the range in altitude for a flare, anyways?
I know the news report stated the flight was 6,000 feet in altitude - much too high for any bottle rocket!

This is really disgusting. I know what I heard on the radio this morning. It was reported on an ABC newsradio broadcast - yet i can find absolutely nothing on google.

Why on earth it would be reported on a news radio broadcast yet nothing more on the internet - at least not yet?

I worked in radio for nearly 20 years and we had had a live 5 minute ABC news feed (from N.Y.) every hour on the hour. I heard many weird reports like this during a single broadcast that were never repeated and unless the local radio station folks were actively listening to it (which is unlikely as they are busy getting ready for the next segment) they will know nothing about it.

I have even called ABC to get a follow up on some strange stories and no one there (in N.Y.) ever seems to know anything about them.

No questioning of how one would reach such an altitude.

I heard the report as well, during the 10:00AM EST news update on XM "Ask!" ahead of the Tony Snow show. I think ABC does their news at the top of the hour?

I think they said the plane was an MD-80.

Understood. But the report was read at about 9:30, well after the second plane hit. That doesn't mean the FBI report was ISSUED after the second plane hit, of course - it might have been "stale news" mistakenly presented as something else. I can't remember enough to say. Again, it was a tremendously chaotic situation.

This flight had to be a red-eye of some sort going by the early hour on the west coast when the incident was first reported. Flights at this hour tend to be trans continental or flights destined for overseas. Which, of course, means they're maxed out with fuel. Bottle rocket at six thousand feet ... who are they kidding?

Earlier this month Northrop Grumman unveiled a system attached under an airliner to protect from possible missile attacks, in a move to spur public support for equipping commercial airplanes with missile defense systems.

Possibly the least informed comment I have ever heard in my life. Aircraft direction and altitude are controlled by independent throttles, flaps, rudder, elevators, ailerons, trim tabs and probably several others I'm forgetting.

You appear to assert that it's possible to have all of these controls freeze when the plane just happens to be headed straight for a high profile skyscraper (that had already been attacked by terrorists once before) from miles and miles away, in clear skies, and the hapless pilots would just throw up their hands and not only fail to regain control over even one of these systems, but forget to radio their situation (oh, maybe the radio could fail, too) forget to dial 7700 (emergency) or 7600 (communication failure) into their transponder (darn, that could fail too.) etc., etc.

No one that knows anything about aviation saw the first tower smoking and said "Ummmm, probably control failure."
