Doesn't answer my question. Are they not vigilantes?
No, they are not vigilantes.
Vigilantes take the law into their own hands.
The Minutemen's SOP is simply to observe and report.
And that is exactly what they have done.
Both you and the President owe them an apology.
You need to look up the word vigilante.
If you want to be extremely precise about definitions, perhaps you might ask why President Bush is derelict in his duties, under Article 4 Section 4 of the Constitution he swore to uphold?
U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 4: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Invasion: \In*va"sion\, n. [L. invasio: cf. F. invasion. See Invade.] [1913 Webster] 1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
Vigilantes are those who take the law into their own hands. What the Minutemen are doing is lawful, therefore they are not vigilantes. In fact, they are doing what the government border partol agents are supposed to be doing in the first place.
President Bush seems to be timid on this issue, as though he's waiting to see which way the wind will be blowing tomorrow. What he wants to do about illegal immigration is pretty clear, nothing. But right now he's avoiding what is probably the biggest issue on American soil today.
Fighting terror on the homeland is like guarding your own house against intruders, and leaving your doors wide open day and night probably isn't a good idea. Neither with your house or with your country.
Do you call your local neighborhood watch group "vigilantes?"
After 9/11, and after President Bush asked Americans to be "vigilant" and to watch and report any suspicious activity, do you call anyone who reported suspicious activity "vigilantes?"
If you do, then I guess you would consider the Minuteman Project volunteers to be vigilantes. You'd also be a dope.
