I appreciate your reply...and the response by inquest. I'll try to address both with this post..
Where we primarily disagree is on the viability of a member of the U.S. House of Representatives winning the presidency. You mentioned Arnold.
If he were a congressman, and born a U.S. citizen, he might be a contender. Why? Because he has instant national name recognition. The names "Arnold," "Condi," "Hillary," "Jeb Bush," "McCain," "Newt" and "Rudy" are recognized by many people nationwide without explaining who these politicians are.
I'm not saying that the list should be whittled down to these politicos. However, some of them do start out with an almost insurmountable lead in the polls. In this media-driven age, polls drive campaign contributions. And those contributions in turn force other candidates out of the race who can't compete.
The next set of contenders are governors and senators without national name recognition. Richardson of New Mexico, Daniels of Indiana, and half the U.S. Senate (Biden, Allen, etc.) falls in this category. By virtue of the fact that they represent millions of people in entire states, their fundraising machines tend to be larger than that of a member of the House of Representatives who represents a mere 600K-700K constituents.
When I was young and idealistic, I worked for a member of the House who ran for president. He was crushed in the primaries that year...along with every other member of the House, GOP and Democrat alike, who ran for the presidency. The name recognition candidate won the GOP nomination and a governor won the Democrat nomination. The system is designed in such a way that it disfavors members of the House.
I wish Tancredo the best. However, my efforts will be spent trying to persuade the hearts and minds of the leading contenders on the immigration issue. The message should transcend the messenger.
Agreed... dead rats are good... even those used for medical research.. they give me the willies!
well....I guess that settles it then
You sure it wasn't a woodchuck or something?
Woodchucks stay on the ground (being groundhogs and such) most of the time. This was no type of marmot, that's for sure. It had rat written all over it. Maybe I ought to ask George Noory what it was for fun. :)
It is my understanding that Tancredo and his wife still attend White House functions, like the Christmas party and state dinners. However, his access to Bush is limited. I suspect that has as much to do with Bush's views on immigration as it does anything to do with Rove.
Those used for medical research are just white variations of the wild regular rats. But they have proven valuable in some things. Luckily, I haven't seen them too much around here. He'd be pretty flat if I did.
Tancredo has simply inheritied the Buchanan Bridgades on FR. The same people who were pro-Buchanan and anti-Bush are the same ones that make up the Tancredo Cult.
There is a big difference between the two. Buchanan is an anti-semite; Tancredo isn't. That is Pat's Achilles heel, his anti-semitism. Tancredo knows the Muslims are the danger; Pat doesn't.
I agree politics today is driven by the media.. there is not finer example then the crowing of King Kerry by the MSM in the 2004 election... or even going back to the infamous "Dewey Defeats Truman headline" But with the falling stock and distrust of the current strain of yellow journalism..and the rise of Internet activism and journalism perhaps this is a watershed moment. Perhaps I am being Idealistic, but perhaps the time of Media driven polls in passing... All we need to do is look to the PEW poll of the MSM and how the view the situation in Iraq Vs. How the rest of society views Iraq... there is a 20 point difference... The 2006 election cycle will be the real tale of the tape on it.
Flat-rat alert! :)
I will GLADLY vote for Tancredo for President. I will NEVER vote for Buchanan for President.
One is a long-time elected Republican official from the west, and other is a long-time neoconfederate, jew-hating pundit who never held office in his life. The ONLY thing they have in common in they both worked closely with BAY Buchanan (of course, Ronald Reagan himself worked closely with Bay)
But as long as you guys consider to PREEND like they are the same person because they share views on immigration, I am curious, has your hero Harry Browne told you which third party candidate he will run to "take Tancredo out" in 2006?
Flat-rat alert! :)
Actually, I think it's the giant cat outside that keeps them out here. That thing is as big as a small bobcat at least. We had a party in our backyard one time and one of the people there saw him. The joke was that we shouldn't go hiking by the stream that goes along the back of our backyard or the cat would get us. I've seen him a few times.

Are you sure it isn't a bobcat?
Thanks for the ping!
I doubt that Tom Tancredo has been at any White House state dinners
As the writer of this article neglected to mention this, Morris Dees' Southern Law Poverty Center is a leftist organization that continually lies through its teeth; Grover Norquist is a big Arabist and lobbies for their issues; and Darrell Issa is of Arab heritage. Funny that these facts are missing from the article, isn't it. The dead giveaway that the article is written by a leftist.
Oh, I'm certain that the primary season of '08 will be even worse than the one in '00 here. The ALL OR NOTHING crowd would much rather lose and be miserable, then get 1/2, or more, of what they claim to want.
Self correction: Southern Law Poverty Center = Southern Poverty Law Center
