Texas Woman Mauled to Death by Six Dogs

Nov 27 2:52 PM US/Eastern

THORNDALE, Texas

A pack of six dogs mauled a 76-year-old woman to death as she worked in her yard, authorities said.

Lillian Loraine Stiles was riding on a lawn mower in her front yard Saturday when she was confronted by the dogs, described as pit bull- rottweiler mixed breeds, said Milam County Sheriff Charlie West.

Investigators think Stiles was attacked when she got off the mower and headed into her house.

Stiles had severe bites over her entire body, and a man who tried to help her was bitten on one leg, authorities said.

The dogs were found at the home of Stiles' neighbor, Jose Hernandez.

The sheriff's department will send the findings of its investigation to the Milam County District Attorney's Office, which will decide if any criminal charges will be filed against Hernandez.

Thorndale is located about 70 miles west of College Station.

The only thing worse than one pit bull is a pack of pit bulls. If one goes on the attack the others will follow. The owner ought to be thrown in a cage with these dogs for about a week with no food, then spray the owner with blood.

I have warned MY neighbors that more than ONE dog loose and on my property at a time will be considered hostile and dealt with appropriately.

I will not ask permission to kill a dog - an animal. Those who let them roam free will just have to accept the consequences of their own negligence.

If ..if she had a gun and even just shot at one of these beasts ..would the rest of them taken off running or would they have kept at her? How vile would a group of 6 dogs like this be? How much shooting would she have to do to keep them all off her?

it seems to me that pit-bull protagonists are trying to adapt the pro-gun lobby's arguments to defend pit-bulls. It isn't working, because unlike guns, dogs do act independently of their owners.

You are reframing the analogy into something that you can argue against.

Anybody can see that guns don't have brains and that dogs can act independently.
Yet on thread after thread the dog-grabbers make the same lame argument.

The analogy does not hinge on dogs being brainless like guns or on guns being able to act on their own like dogs.

What links the two is the importance of responsible ownership and the nanny-leftist premise that people can not be counted on to be responsible therefore ~fill in the blank~ must not allow.

You might can trust one, but combine that meek animal with just one with an attitude and both become killers.

Let me answer - a pack of animals attacked mine which was on a chain in my yard. I fired one warning and the pack of five broke, but one continued to pursue my animal. I shot and hit the dog in the hind quarter and that ended the pursuit. The one I shot was apparently the instigator of the other four's hostility.

In dealing with a pack of dogs, shooting one or two will scare the others away, especially if you pop the one leading the attack, which is generally the one closest to you and thus the one needing killed first anyhow.

Before the Coyotes moved in, packs of dogs had assumed the niche formerly occupied by wolves where I grew up. This is where I became experienced in this matter.

I back you 100%

I have warned MY neighbors that more than ONE dog loose and on my property at a time will be considered hostile and dealt with appropriately.

One dog plus one dog does not equal two dogs...it equals a pack.
Any experience a person has with a particular dog's behavior goes right out the window when dealing with a pack.

Why would anyone want a pit bull? They're ugly and mean. Oh, thats right - I almost forgot - dogs are just like their owners.

Yep and ugly and mean posts are just like their authors.

These breeds . . . and a few others . . . are good for only one thing: target practice.

I agree. But be careful, you'll have the FReeperPETA lovers here in a tizzy. Just wait, they'll come out of the woodwork.

I'm struck that the gentlest dog I know is a Rottweiler.

I don't doubt what you write.

Pray to gawd your daughter never offends the peaceful Rotweiler, such as appearing to interfere with something it believes is its, like food or sex.  Your daughter will probably not survive.

Let em come.

I've owned dogs most of my life, even when living overseas.  Some big.  Some little.  Some pure breeds.  Some mixed.  They've all enjoyed long lives in my care.

Some dogs have no reason to exist outside a secure kennel under professional supervision and care.  Running loose, they should be shot on sight.

Free roaming dogs are already outlawed. Dogs still get loose.

When there is a chance vicious dogs will get loose like this they should be banned

Guns are required to be safely contained
yet some people do not act responsibly
and the guns fall into the wrong hands.
Should we therefore ban guns?

These dogs may have their place, guarding fenced property and stuff. I haven't decided yet but I think people need to be really careful with them as pets and with kids around them. My mom took in a rescue. He's as gentle as he can be. A big 3 legged baby. This baby bit my SF who was trying to bath him few weeks ago though. Anyway, any dog that is loose and comes aggressively in my yard will be put down. I don't mow and carry though. She should have run into them. Her best weapon and get away at the time was probably her mower. I might have tried to get in the house too though. Sad and preventable.

Well, we know the answer to one question don't we? How well NOT shooting kept them off of her.

I have personal knowledge of this event. This woman was the mother of my one of my best friends. My Wife is at their home as we speak. We were notified yesterday afternoon by the daughter in-law. Please pray for these folks in their time of sorrow.

FYI: MR. Hernandez and his family are illegal aliens and the dogs in question all belonged to them. Apparently the dogs were not being fed regularly and roamed in a pack. The other man who discovered the body was sent to the hospital to receive rabies treatments as a precaution.
