Texas Woman Mauled to Death by Six Dogs

Nov 27 2:52 PM US/Eastern

THORNDALE, Texas

A pack of six dogs mauled a 76-year-old woman to death as she worked in her yard, authorities said.

Lillian Loraine Stiles was riding on a lawn mower in her front yard Saturday when she was confronted by the dogs, described as pit bull- rottweiler mixed breeds, said Milam County Sheriff Charlie West.

Investigators think Stiles was attacked when she got off the mower and headed into her house.

Stiles had severe bites over her entire body, and a man who tried to help her was bitten on one leg, authorities said.

The dogs were found at the home of Stiles' neighbor, Jose Hernandez.

The sheriff's department will send the findings of its investigation to the Milam County District Attorney's Office, which will decide if any criminal charges will be filed against Hernandez.

Thorndale is located about 70 miles west of College Station.

In my opinion, you should have been locked up. That is really sick.

My neighbors were very happy to have me living there. I kept the neighborhood safe and drove the scum out (some people thought he was a drug dealer).

Neither your sheriff friend nor your permits would have done you any good had someone complained you were terrorizing the neighborhood with your firearms.

A lot of liberties beyond local jurisdiction are afforded to someone of my occupation.

'Pit bulls' are out of their environment when they aren't in a pit - covered with a little dirt.

The same is true of drug dealers...

Perhaps you would like to tell me the difference between wolverine or puma and a dog.

They are about the same weight, size, all eat meat and have mouths full of flesh ripping teeth. Dogs just don't climb trees very well, but can swim a little better than the other two.

When my son was small, I had occassion to comment, when hearing of news reports like this, that if a dog I perceived as dangerous lived in my neighborhood, and was loose, I would take it out.

What I see in your story, is that you had a different situation that was even worse. You had a man brandishing a "weapon". Because of the nature of the weapon, it wasn't acceptable to shoot him, so you shot the weapon.

I have no problem with it. You could justify shooting him, in my book. If you had, and I were on that jury, it would have been a hung jury.

Ah, some fires, yes, we most certainly do.  Regulated by city ordinance, as a matter of fact.

This is the best way to prevent people from burning the U.S. flag: local fire ordinances. If it worked in ultra-left wing Santa Cuz, CA, it will work anywhere...

He knew I had four more and the rack in the back window of my pick up had something else if that wasn't enough.

If you had, and I were on that jury, it would have been a hung jury.

It's also nice to have the full support of the neighborhood too...

"Those little shotshells wouldn't even penetrate the skin of a dog. Fire one at a cardboard box sometime. The pattern is pitiful, and the penetration is negligible. If the situation is so bad that a firearm is required, it had better be up to the task.

Which is the point--just being "stung" and faced with the sound of the firearms report is sometimes sufficient to deter a dog attack. If it isn't, the follow-on shots will terminate it. The combined loading gives you options.

"A .25 auto with shotshells wouldn't even kill a snake! Well, maybe if you shoved it in the snake's mouth and pulled the trigger...

Well, having killed a few snakes with such shotshells in .22 caliber, I can definitively say that you are wrong.

"I know you know that guns are not toys or a deterrence, they are a last line at defense."

Sorry, but guns ARE a deterrence, with humans, in many cases without firing a shot. A dog can't visually make the connection between the threat of the gun and any consequence to itself--it takes the "extra" of getting "stung" with the shot and hearing the "bang" to get the point across.

I was at Walgreen's on Thanksgiving getting a prescription refilled and noticed the 30 some year old man in front of me getting two bottles of liquid amoxicillian. I made a comment about a child and an infection and he told me his son was bit by the neighbors dog. A trip to the ER and 15 stitches, a tetanus shot and the antibiotic followed. He said he saw the incident and the dog simply attacked unprovoked. He called 911 and before the sheriff deputy, he lives in the county - not city, arrived he had shot and killed the dog. The deputy told the dog owner he would be filling a report with the Commonwealth Attorney and it would be up to him if he was cited for the incident.

The dad said he was going to an attorney today and wanted to sue the owner for everything he had - can't say as I don't blame him.

I was there for Thanksgiving. One of the things I did, was go with my FIL to one of his rent houses, where another renter at an adjacent house (FIL has a Monopoly row on this street), had complained about a Rottie being present.

Sure enough, there was a Rottie there, and my FIL told the guy it wasn't allowed under the lease, and needed to be gone by today. The dog was loud, obnoxious, and threatening, though well-tied with a steel cable.

Will try to ping you if I have more time at Christmas, we should do coffee again.

The dog owner should be thankful the only thing killed was his dog.

What is a dog, a cat, and a skunk?

I'll bite, doc. What is a dog, a cat and a skunk?

A friend of mine, very anti-gun (she would probably ban them all) is against breed bans. She uses the argument that you shouldn't blame all pit bulls for the bad deeds of a few. Of course, it would never occur to her the hypocrisy of her argument.

"Call your insurance agent and ask which would cost more on your insurance a certain type of dog breed or insuring a teenager."

Try to get homeowners insurance now and have a pit bull or doberman etc ans see how far you get. You can insure a youth. It may cost you more but insurance companies are tending to NOT insure you or will drop you if you have a dog like that.

Just the other day, we had people come by to look at our place we have for sale and saw our outside dogs (we have inside yappers-yorkies) and commented that we keep them in the yard all the time? We said yes we do. We don't believe in letting dogs run free - they w=either will get into trouble or get killed on the highway (here there is no county leash law) AND you can bet that they would get into trouble being in a pack.

I think I'll pack some heat the next time I mow my yard.

I suggest a shoulder holster. Works when I am on the garden tractor or the big tractor. Hip holster gets in the way of the seat.

Only an idiot or criminal (like the illegal alien who owned and abused these dogs thus allowing the tragedy to occur)allows their dogs (large or small) to run around as a pack or unleashed in a residential area.

And in this instance, the father acted exactly correctly. Back in the country where I was born and raised, any stray dog that attacked ANYTHING on our property was shot. No 911 calls (actually, back then, there was no 911 "to" call). And the sheriff or other law enforcement would never even hear about it.

I'm with you. Dogs running loose together are a recipe for trouble.

Packs of dogs are a big problem in urban areas, too. I grew up in an urban area, and there were always packs of dogs roaming, from when I was a kid. They'd attack smaller pet dogs and sometimes people, too. Every once in awhile, the police would find and shoot them.

Regardless, the guy was walking the dog, on a leash down the street and you believe it is heroic and legal to put a gun to the dog's head and pull the trigger?
